Scotland 4 days
 

Any tips/suggestions on what I should see/prioritize with 4 full days staying in Edinburgh? I want to see Edinburgh 2 of the days,..then a day trip to St. Andrews,...followed by another day trip to Iverness. Is Iverness possible? Or should I choose to see another place such as Glasgow which is closer?

I'd spend a day in Glasgow ahead of Inverness. It's got plenty to see and is only an hour away by train.

I'd go visit Stirling instead of Inverness. More interesting, and much closer. There is so much to see there. The castle, Bannockburn Heritage Center, Wallace monument, all within the town. If you have the use of a car, there is lots more within half an hour's driving time from Stirling. Castle Campbell, Linlithgow Palace, Doune Castle, Loch Katrine, Inchmahome Priory, just to mention a few.

You could easily spend all 4 days in Edinburgh. St Andrews is a good day trip. What are you interested in- there are masses of good day trips out of Edinburgh. I certainly wouldn't do Glasgow unless you're big into cities. I wouldn't do Inverness either. It's too far for a comfortable day trip, and no interesting in itself

I second a daytrip to Stirling Castle and suggest to include a drive to the Trossachs and Loch Katrine. A steamboat ride on Loch Katrine is extremely scenic. And for a most romantic (and historically significant) ruin, take the boat to Inchmahome Priory within the Lake of Menteith. This altogether makes a rewarding daytrip from Edinburgh.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I will cancel my trip to Inverness and instead go to Stirling Castle etc.- including a drive to Trossachs and Loch Katrine.

I have been to Edinburgh 2x and just loved it both times, definitely want to go back!

If you know the story of Greyfriars Bobby, do go to see the Edinburgh Museum for a display all about him. Almost right across the street is the People's Story and I liked that a lot, too.

The Lake of Menteith is nearly 10 miles from Loch Katrine.

I think Traveler1959 meant a driving tour of the Trossachs - then it would be easy to cover Stirling Castle, Inchmahome and Loch Katrine in one day. But using public transport and walking -- not a chance.

From Loch Katrine take the road to Aberfoyle. It will take you over the Duke's Pass, a very scenic drive through the Trossachs. From Aberfoyle join the A873 to Port of Menteith. A short side road will take you from there to the place from where you hail the boat that takes you to Inchmahome.

I really enjoyed the extensicve ruins of Linlithgow Palace, about half an hour on the train from Edinburgh.
