Scotch Tasting

I've heard of distillery tours in Scottland that are like the wine country tours of Northern California but I cannot find any information on them. Does anyone know where I can find information.

Hi Bill:
Try www.webcom/tli/whisky/ or
put "distilleries" in your search engine.
I did the tour at Edradour in Perthshire when I visited Scotland and make sure to try a "wee dram"
Have a great time and Good luck!

Bill,

The Dalwhinnie Distillery has a tour (it's phone no. is 05282-208)--it's in central Scotland, approx. 2 hours Northwest of Edinburgh if I remember correctly. The Dalwhinnie facility also has a nice tasting room and gift shop where you can sample and buy single malts other than just Dalwhinnie (e.g., Lagavulin, my personal favorite). Also, there is a tasting facility in Edinburgh, but I can't recall the name--you should see it in a travel guide (such as Fodors!).

For information on a number of distillery tours in the northeast of Scotland, go to the Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board site, www.agtb.org, then click on Attractions, then on Tourist Trails, then on Malt Whisky Trail.

http://www.maltwhiskytrail.com/

Do a search ( not a fodor search , just a regular one) under whisky trail, you should find lots of info in addition to the above.
Have one for us ! There is a great restaurant in edinburgh, Martin's on Rose St , North lane. In addition to wonderful food and wine, Martin is quite expert on Malt whiskies.

Bill

simpler answer. I don't think anyone does tours taking in more than one distillery. (although I see there's a cruise doing it)

Hereabouts there's a thing called the Whisky Trail, which is simply a route that takes you from one distillery to another; mostly on Speyside; mostly they do an in house tour for tourists.

Moray Council ran a whisky festival last year which I understand was great fun. I suspect a web search would get you the details.

The whisky trail has a leaflet. If you want more information than you can get on the Net, let me know and I'll send it to you

Bill - Sheila had it right, I've done the Whisky Trail twice, Glenfiddich has a good tour, 2-3 distilleries a day is all I could handle, but the choices are many.
Enjoy the "wee dram."

Bill,

There is a self drive tour around the Speyside distilleries. The website is

www.maltwhiskytrail.com

You do not say when you are travelling but it may interest you to know that there is an annual spring whisky festival (held this year at the start of may) during which there are 'tutored nosings and tastings' of whiskies which may be of interest. Have a look at

www.spiritofspeyside.com

I believe there are also events put on by Johnstons (the woollen people) and Baxters (the food people) to entertain companions not interested in whisky - this may also be of interest.

Also if you do end up visiting the area, make sure you call in at Gordon and MacPhails of South Street, Elgin (ask anyone in Elgin where it is - its famous) as they have a huge range of whisky and very knowledgable staff. I beleive they will ship around the world.

As a former resident of Elgin, I urge you to visit the area - its beautiful.

Don't know of any really comprehensive tours,(please post if you find one)as far as I know these tours operate within a limited area, some were started by the local tourist authority, and only operate within that region.
So perhaps you should consider what type of whisky & country you like - the famous malts from the Island of Isla are are as different from those of Speyside as the countryside & culture is.

Thanks for topping. I found one. I's under Saltire Tours, and they have a website. I'll put up the URL later

The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre in Edinburgh is worth a visit.
Their website is at http://www.whisky-heritage.co.uk/

I don't know if it still applies but when my 90 year old father-in-law went there with a friend, you got a free dram at the end of the tour. Several ladies didn't want theirs and passed them to the two old gents. They had to leave while they could still walk out unaided.

The URL is http://www.saltiretours.co.uk/.

There's a tour called Whisky Galore which is as close to what you're looking for as I can find. It includes the heritage centre in Edinburgh
