Schöneberg in Berlin... Bad idea?

Hi everyone,
I need your advice.
My boyfriend and I will be staying in Schöneberg a block away from the Nollendorfplatz station with access to lines U1, U2, U3 and U4. I booked this a couple of months ago before reading travel books about Berlin.
We booked in this area since it's known as the traditional gay Mecca of Berlin
However, I've been reading about Berlin and it seems we are far away from most attractions, which seem to be in Mitte.
Do y'all recommend trying to change travel arrangements and stay closer to Mitte?

It takes 32 minutes to get from Nollendorfplatz to the Pergamon. Is that too long?

Omg. That's an infinite amount of time :-/

Any recommendations of what area to stay? You're pointing to the museum island, which I wouldn't spend more than half a day visiting.

Why don't you tell US just which attractions you are going to visit and THEN we can figure out some central location for you to stay in.

being right next to the transport station seems like a great choice. Not EVERYTHING worth seeing in Berlin is in Mitte.

That's a perfectly convenient location, and still east of Zoo & KuDamm too. You'll enjoy your comings and goings on bus and the U-Bahn (it's fun to do Berlin in the upper deck of busses.)

Honeslty, I do not want to waste 30 minutes on public transportation to reach the tourist spots.

I have never been to Berlin before, so I want to do the 'typical' touristy things:

Visit the Pergamon
Go up the Reichstag
Walk through the Brandenburg Gate
Check out the bust of Queen Neferitit at the Neues Museum
Check out Checkpoint Charlie
Etc...

However, I also want to have access to restaurants, and since I will be there Thursday - Monday, I want to experience the vibrant gay life, which is why I chose Schoeneberg. For what I've read, that's not the case anymore as many of the 'trendy' gay bars are now located in Prenzlaur Berg.

Any feedback?!?!

Berlin is a big city, very much spread out and in square miles much larger than Paris. Better get used to travelling more than 30 minutes to tourist sites.

If you just want to check out the absolute highlights in the central area (like those you listed) you must stay somewhere in that area - district named "Mitte", best along the street "Unter den Linden", Gendarmenmarkt square or so. Honestly, it's really touristy and I would not recommend it.

Why wouldn't you?

Btw, i just bought a second book about Berlin, and Rick Steves recommends staying slightly north of the Museum Island (border between Mitte and Prenzlaurr Berg)

I prefer staying in residential areas/neighbourhoods where actually someone lives, not somewhere with mostly offices, museums, embassies ... you get the picture.

We stayed in Prenzlauer Berg near SedenfeltPlatz (?) and really liked the neighbourhood. Easy to get around, good restaurants nearby. Can't speak to the nightlife - we were too tired from walking all day to go out much!
I agree the heart of Mitte was very touristy - PB was more "real" to us. If you're going in the summer I think PB would be a nice choice - easy to walk to Mitte but away from the tourist stuff.
