Schilthorn for breakfast
If the Swiss weather gods are in a gentle mood, I'm considering a ride up to the Schilthorn for breakfast. Any comments on this experience? What's for breakfast up there? Is it worth the pricey tickets to get up there?

If the weather gods are in a sunny mood, go, by all means. If you stay at the hotel in Murren by the tram, you can get a voucher for your breakfast (they are owned by the same company.) I don't remember the name of the hotel but it is easy to get. Never mind what they serve, it will be an incredible experience. CJ

You have a choice of two different breakfasts. The 007 Champagne breakfast or a simple breakfast. We had the Champagne breakfast and enjoyed sipping a glass of champagne as the restaurant turned. It was a big breakfast with meats and cheeses, bread, coffee, and I can't remember what else but it was a lot of food.
The china it is served on is beautiful. It was designed for the Schilthorn Restaurant, done in blue and white, and the motif is (if I recall correctly) a mountain. They had some for sale in the gift shop and I wish I had bought at least a mug. We were told that the company was going out of business that made the China so perhaps it is no longer available. It is definitely worth the pricey ticket to get up there. The view is outstanding. If you have to choose between the Schilthorn and the Jungfraujoch, do the Schilthorn. Next time I go I would like to take the cable car from Wegen up to the top and get off and hike around. Looked easy and beautiful. |
Just so Russ doesn't get confused - Ronda must mean Murren, not Wengen. There's no direct route from Wengen - which is on the other side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley - to the Schilthorn, and the only way up, other than hiking, is the tram from Murren. Great trip - I've never been there for breakfast but have had lunch there several times while skiing. Good food at not-too-unreasonable prices, considering where it is.
Don't forget to rent the old James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" before you go - it was largely filmed at Piz Gloria on top of the Schilthorn and at other locations in Murren and the Lauterbrunnen valley. Another good one for those headed for Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch is Clint Eastwood's "The Eiger Sanction," also shot on location. Both rather forgettable films, but both with great shots of the area and places that you'll recognize when you get there. |
Thanks for the tips. Sounds like a "go". We rented "...Secret Service" a few weeks ago, FlyFish; horrible film, but what scenery.

Sorry I wasn't very clear. Two different trams: One from Murren to Schilthorn, another from Wengen to Mannlichen. Next time I want to take the tram from Wengen to Mannlichen and hike around possibly hiking to Kleine Scheidegg. You can also take a tram from Grindelwald to Mannlichen. One I believe Bob recommends is Grindelwald to First.

Trams? You mean cable-cars/ropeways?

Yes, thank you hike. Little cars suspended from cables.

The hotel Caroljean is referring to is the Hotel Alpenruh. It's owned/operated by the same company that runs the Schilthornbahn and the Schilthorn Taverne (located in the Schilthorn cable station).
We got a voucher from the Alpenruh one morning and had breakfast on the Schilthorn. It was a beautiful clear day, and the view was spectacular. The breakfast itself was not much to get excited about, but that wasn't the point really. I remember alot of bread... Incidentally, if you stay at the Alpenruh, you can charge meals from their restaurant and the Schilthorn Taverne to your hotel bill. They have similar menus, but the Schilthorn Taverne is slightly cheaper. www.schilthorn.ch, [email protected] |
Good evening, Russ
The Schlithorn, (Piz Gloria) has a more than excellant view of the alps, go dor it. Sometimes the cablecars are shut down when there are high mountain winds and secondly if it is cloudy on top without much of a chance to clean, wait till the next day, as getting to the top in the clouds does not prevent much of a view.....Clearn, no winds, much worth it.....
