Schengen Visa Expiry/Return Date
 

I have a valid visa that expires on the 1st os September. Can I travel back hom on that day or do I have to leave the EU zone a day earlier?

You can travel home on the day the visa expires, however it might be safer to leave a day early, in case there are any problems with your flight. It is not unheard of for an airline to cancel a flight sometime in advance, or for there to be a mechanical problem on the plane, or even a strike which could result in you overstaying your visa.

I wouldn't worry too much about a day here or there. When you're leaving on an expired visa (by one or two days) they are way more lenient than when you arrive and have no valid visa. So if your arrangements have already been made, go right ahead, you may not even get a second look, or only a snide remark on the way through, and that you can live with... It's the people who don't understand the 90-days in/90-days out rule that get into trouble.
