The question of Romania being ready and qualified to Join Schengen has gone on for some time, last year being no (Romania even requested withdrawal from consideration), but this year, yes, with no firm decision as far as I can find.
At any rate, for consideration, they must be following all Schengen rules including external border rules. This would mean you could not enter because you would then be able to enter the other Schengen countries through Romania. As of June, 2016, they were approved as following the rules, but no vote on acceptance yet. Don't know where things stand at this minute or where you can find it, but if they are following the rules, you could not enter. |
Effective,Thank you so much for your precise information.

Go for it dude. YOLO

The world is a big place. Why limit yourself to Europe?

As of today, Romania is not a signatory to the Schengen agreement. Although it has been approved in principle by the European Commission, that only means that a unanimous decision by all the EU member states has to be reached, and that has not happened to this date.
Just plan your approach so that you don't need to go through immigration/border police in any airport where you may have a connection that can't happen while you remain in transit - just having to change terminals somewhere may mean that you have to "make entry" into that country, even for the few minutes that it takes you reach your connecting flight - bummer. So fly direct (non-stop) or through a connecting airport in a non-Schengen country (the UK for example). |
I know Romania issues their own visas (in addition to allowing entry to the Schengen visa holders. Instead of asking on forums though, I would directly write / call to the nearest Romanian consulate to get information. I personally would not want to arrange my traveling plans based on answers from forums when dealing with visas. Romania was wonderful and I hope you get a chance to visit. Good luck!
