Scenic mountain trip/Munich restaurant

Which is most scenic (for mountain views) Berchtesgarden National Park, Garmisch or Salzburg? How easily accessable from train stations? Which would be less crowded in July? (Will be there Wed- Fri.) Good German food in Munich - less that 15 Euro per person.

For food, head to the Peterhof restaurant, right on the Marienplatz. Great sausages and sauerkraut, along with homemade mustards and baskets of wonderful breads.

I have a hard time imagining anything more scenic than the vicinity of Berchtesgaden. Topping for other opinions. J.

the countryside around garmisch is very beautiful. the train station stops right in the middle of town and is surrounded by hotels and places where you can rent apartments very reasonably. The trains in Austrian reach plenty of scenic areas. I personally preferred Garmisch area to Salzburg.

Garmisch boasts the highest german peak, the Zugspitze (around 2900m, cable car), that is definetely the most spectacular mountain view you can get in Germany (looking down, at least), as you, at clear days, get a glimpse of the whole central alpine ridge in Austria. Looking upwards, from valley to the top, the Berchtesgaden Area with the spectacular boat cruise over Lake Königssee, might be even more fascinating. Both, Garmisch and Berchtesgaden, are very easily accessable by train. Whenever I'm in Munich, I have my bavarian food at the "Wirtshaus in der Au" in the City district "Au", south-east of the Deutsche Museum (walking distance). traditional bavarian food, few tourists, suprisingly young locals. www.wirtshausinderau.de

Donisl, a restaurant right across from the Rathaus off of Marienplatz, has good german food in a traditional atmosphere at good prices. Hackerhaus on Sendlingerstrasse a few blocks from Marienplatz also was very good, though a bit more expensive than Donisl. we enjoyed them both.

We tried several restaurants while we were in Munich last month. Really enjoyed the Hafbrau Haus near our hotel, the Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten (Four Seasons) Meals are less than 15 euros including a beer. It is rather loud, however the crowds were always great.

Liebighof im Lehel is a good restaurant in Munich. 2 years ago it had plenty of selections in your price range, probably still does.

You will not have bad views in either Garmisch or Berchtesgaden. Take your pick!

The Zugspitz is a great view, been doing it since 1970, but now expensive to get up there. The Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area is Sound of Music area. Just rent the film and watch the opening scenes to see what you will see in that area. Take the tour to the Kielstein (Hitler's Tea House) and you will see some more great scenery.

Either way....both beautiful. Try to do both of them.
