Scavi Tour Rome

I keep reading about a Scavi Tour in Rome....what exactly is it?

It is a tour of the excavations underneath St. Peter's which give the details of the basilica's origins and construction. There is also an absolute jewel-box-like chapel adjacent to the tomb (if you believe) of St. Peter which is located exactly below the alter canopy in the basilica above which is exactly below the dome. The tour exits in an area containing the crypts of past popes.

It's really a very good tour with a lot of interesting information about the church and ancient Rome. Just a bit of warning: The excavation area can be quite warm and is very tight in places. Those with claustrophobia should think twice before taking this tour.

Should read "altar canopy."

I e-mailed for a reservation for my May trip about 2 months ago; I just heard last week that there is a spot for me. I will report back on my experience!

I am such a scatter-brain. I think I may have requested a tour about a month ago, so to be sure I sent them one today, and tried writing it in italian! Maybe someone will think it amusing and sign us up for the tour. I did request it en inglese though! I'm keeping my finger crossed.
