Scandinavia in the winter
My friend and her daughter have recently embarked on a three month tour around Europe, also spending some time in Morroco and ending in Bali. The focus and intention of their journey is " the discovery and expression of joy in life, including life transitions." My friend is a musician/teacher who is gathering knowledge of world music traditions to use in her workshops and programs. Her daughter is a hospice provider, who is on a much needed break, but is also using this time to explore how other cultures deal with life and death transitions.
Right now they are in Oslo, until Sunday the 28th. Then they move on to Stockholm through Wednesday, March 3, and finally Helsinki from Thursday, March 4 through Monday, March 8. Then they fly to Morroco. I've been following them on their blog, and I know they have been to the Munch Museum and the Sculpture Park in Oslo. Any other recommendations of sights not to be missed? And any advice for their time in Sweden? Robyn :)>- |
Bygdoy peninsula in Oslo for the viking ship, Fram, and Kon-Tiki museums.
|
Thanks for your response. The Viking Ship and Kon-Tiki museums sound interesting. What is the Fram?

There is an excellent Resistance Museum in Oso.
|
It's a very early ice-breaker vessel used in polar explorations, by (amongst others), Amundsen.
You can actually go onto the ship (or you could a few years back when I was there), and get a feel for how cramped and dark the living quarters were. The whole Bygdoy peninsula is very attractive, with woodland and beaches (Huk and Paradisbukta) - it's a shame your daughter is not there in the warmer months, really. Anyway, there are several museums with a sea-faring theme concentrated into a small area, and it is one of my favourite bits of Oslo. |
Thank you for the additional information, RM67. It's my friend and her daughter that are travelling. I just hope they have enough clothes packed into their carry on bags to keep them warm.
nytraveler - I really enjoyed the Resistance Museum in Amsterdam, so I will be sure to suggest the museum in Oslo. I found the subject quite fascinating and humbling. Excellent suggestions so far. Any ideas for Stockholm & Helsinki? They'll be there in 3 days. Robyn :)>- |
The new opera house is a must see for its architecture. It resembles a glacier and it reaches down to the water. We walked on the roof although perhaps that is impossible in the winter.

Hey artstuff... email me. I know NE PA and wondering where you live?
|
Hi surfmom - I live in "the only town in Pennsylvania" - Bloomsburg. Actually, I live outside of town, out in the country, but Bloomsburg is the closest post office. Are you from NE PA, or did you just spend time here?
Robyn :)>- |
Robyn, I think I remember you and I conversing once before about flights... the Bloombsburg thing is familiar. I grew up in Bradford County... "real" NE PA!
