While I love Denmark, I think you would be missing out if you did not spend some time exploring the Fjords in Norway. I would minimize your time in Oslo, and immdediately head north for a few days before heading to Denmark.

We went on a tour last year about the same time you are planning to go which allowed a little more time than you have, including Helsinki, but I would say your plan sounds OK. I'd recommend the overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, the Norway in a Nutshell which is beautiful even though a long day, and flying from Bergen to Stockholm since it is quite a distance.

Might mention that while Copenhagen and Bergen are very walkable, and Oslo too, Stockholm is a big city likely taking more time to see. I assume you are traveling by train and plane and not auto? Other details if you write me.

If you purchase transatlantic flights from the USA with SAS (or thru United Air using SAS), you can add on a purchase of reserved flights for about $65,(or $95 with the flexiblity to cancel or get a refund). The flight is only 1 hour. You need to do the before you leave the US. You need to contact SAS directly because I did. I have flights thru United and they didn't know about the deal

I'm Norw. and would prefer Stockholm and Bergen to Copenhagen. But be sure to do the Tivoli in CPH, at night-time. Also Lousiana, modern art museum. You can easily spend 2 days in Oslo, but one of your days in Bergen should be spent on the former-mentioned trip to Aurland and Flaam. Xpressboat to Aurland, bus 20min to Flaam, train to Myrdal, train to Oslo or back to Bergen is quite possible in one day. Bergen is charming, more than Oslo. There are so many "must-sees" in Norway ! But do take the train between Bergen and Oslo !
I'm not sure if the 2000/Lynx is still operating between Stockholm and Oslo, check the website nsb.no for train service (English pages, too)

Just adored Copenhagen in April this year. It was an island of tranquility and class between the hysteria of Paris and Shanghai (OK, weird itinerary). I could have stayed for a week in Illums Bolighus and that's just a store - with the best in everything Scandiavian-designed. Stayed in unpretentious and inexpensive Hotel Imperial opposite Vesterbro station - a 30 second walk to Radhusplatz. Spotless, very comfortable bed and friendly staff. It was under AUD$100 (US$75?) Best bargains? Bunches of tulips for two bucks, and the best rhubarb tart I ever ate - seven bucks in Illum's basement.

A lovely free thing to do in Copenhagen is to see the changing of the guard at the Amelienborg Palace at noon .I presume it may be dependant on the Queen being in residence .We stumbled on to it whilst walking back from viewing the Mermaid .Low security and just a lovely experience because there were few people and no barriers as you stand in the middle of the palace courtyard . You also get to see the wonderful architectural axis of the new Opera house across the water contrasted with the Cathedral at the other end of the axis. To that end try and visit or see a performance at this Utzon ( daughter of Sydney Opera House architect ) designed building.
Copenhagen is expensive but very lovely .

Hey Joe, we were in Denmark & Sweden last year for a 2nd time. We stayed at The Square hotel in Denmark. The price wasn't too bad and it is right in the middle of everything! I was very modern, clean and the breakfasts were good. The rooms are small, but good. We took train from copenhagen to the west coast of Sweden --Gothenburg. The west coast is beautiful. Sweden is beautiful and the people are so nice. Everyone speaks some English, even if they are a bit shy about doing so. They do like to talk to Americans. Have a good trip. CK

I visited the cities in this order: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen

I flew among the first three.

I did the Nutshell trip from Oslo to Bergen.

Whichbudget.com has a list of airlines you can use -- you'll be using Norwegian or FlyNordic, most likely.

Don't forget to do a price comparison. I remember cases where I saved about $10-$20 for flights that were leaving at the same times (or roughly the same times).

To fly to Bergen, tickets can be booked on Expedia. I investigated this option but ultimately didn't use it. I think that you can fly to Bergen direct from Copenhagen and Oslo (based on the research I did), but not from Stockholm.

When I researched my trip, I asked about hotels here, and if you click on my name you can find some useful answers.

I'm new (today!) in Fodor's and have enjoyed reading this thread about traveling in Scandinavia. We're planning a trip during mid to late March 2006. We're considering taking the train from Oslo to Bergin, but I wonder if all we'll see is lots and lots of snow. Will this train ride (and the Flamm side trip) be worthwhile at this time of year? Same question about doing a fjord trip from Bergen.

Suzanne: You will have a better chance of getting answers to your questions and other information if you start a new thread (message). That way your question will be seen. Something like " does fjord travel in mid-march make sense?" You can add your other questions in the body of the message.
We have been to the area and would tell you the train ride from Oslo to Bergen is beautiful. Also, you could take the "In a Nutshell" trip from Oslo to Bergen through the fjords which is fantastic. But, I know nothing about conditions in mid-March, so, I will defer to others. Good luck.
