Scam in Cetara
Hope this helps at least one person, preferably hundreds. Stay AWAY from the Ristorante San Pietro in the lovely fishing village of Cetara on the Amalfi Coast. No menu/no prices/attempted wine substitution(caught that one--and apparently from discussions with friends this is a common problem)but the piece de resistance: ONE UNORDERED entree(shared by 2 people) that they charged 44E for. Being taken advantage of put us in a bad mood for the entire week. Also, beware: apparently there is no consumer protection by Visa in foreign countries. PLEASE AVOID THIS ESTABLISHMENT!

Sorry - I don;t understand the unordered entree. Did they bring something you didn't order and you refused it and they charge you anyway? Or did they bring it and you ate it - then objected to the price?
It's unusual in Italy not to have a menu posted outside - and I would always ask for one - with prices - before ordering - unless money is no object. |
actually we rarely found menus outside on this trip-what we considered a strange phenom but had never been to S Italy before. We were getting ready to leave, they came out with the entree, we said "no, no"...ah, especial especial...he plated it up,dividing it between two, we picked a bit and even might have felt okay paying for the one entree but 44 E(equivalent of $70!!) for one fish?? sorry: scam scam scam

You probably did order it. It was probably fish, and it was probably charged by the etto (100 grams). 44 Euro for a main course of fish for two people is not overpriced.
|
Sorry, our messages overlapped. I was looking up prices while composing mine.

He was speaking Spanish?
You ordered fish. You weren't aware that it's charged by the gram. It's very expensive, especially with the lousy exchange rate. Not a scam. |
Only if the fish weighed less than, say, 1.5 pounds were you overcharged.
