Sasbachwalden or Gengenbach?
Hello, we are a 30-something couple who will be traveling to the Black Forest Region for a few nights in May and trying to pick the right town to base ourselves.
Do you suggest staying in Gengenbach or Sasbachwalden? We will be traveling by train from Frankfurt? Also, we are looking for a town that is fun, has good food/beer/wine, culture, forest hikes/waterfalls, local wine and that is easy to access other towns. We were also considering heading to Strasbourg and Colmer for a day or night too. I welcome your recommendations? Thanks! |
Sasbachwalden is cute, but too small and more of a village than a town. Gengenbach is livelier, with enough restaurants, cafes, wine bars. I did a day trip to Strasbourg from there, the bus/train ride was convenient and quick. It is not located in the high Black Forest, though, so you'll see more vineyards than forests and no waterfall, I am afraid.

Both towns are not IN the Black Forest, but in the foothills.
However, from Gengenbach (a most picturesque historic town), you have easy train connections to Triberg (36 min, direct) which in IN the Black Forest with waterfalls, hiking trails, cuckoo clock stores and a cute museum. The same train brings you to the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum. From Gengenbach, the train to Strasbourg runs 41 min, with one change. To Colmar, it is 1:28, with 2 changes. With all this, Gengenbach would be the better option for you. |
I stayed in Gengenbach for a week a few years ago, day tripping from there. Enjoyed my home base immensely!

This is all great feedback and seems to be close to everything we want to do. Thank you all! We are very excited. This will be our first time in 10 years to get away from the kids and out of the country!

Be sure to try Flammkuchen- a crispy-cracker base type of 'pizza'....mmmmm!
With toppings like sour cream, onions, ham, veges etc Great with local wine or a good beer! |
We booked a B&B in Gengenbach. Thank you again.
The Flammkuchen sounds delish! Thanks Mokka4! |
