Sarlat Family Hotel
 

We are going to the Dordogne for one week the first week of June: My husband and I, three of our children (ages 16, 12 and 12) and my in-laws. We would like to stay in a nice place but one that is welcoming to our children and central to the area. My first choice, based on what I've read, was Domaine de Rochebois, but it is fully booked. I even thought we might look into a "gite." The Domaine de Monrecour outside Sarlat has these accomodations, but I can find little about the hotel. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

The reason you probably can't find much information on it is that it's only been a hotel for a year or two. It was a private château before that, and it used to have the most magnificent sunflowr fields surrounding it.

I've never been in thehotel, but I drive by it a lot. It looks very swank, but it sits out there in the middle of a large field (no sunflowers anymore) with not a tree in sight - it looks as though you'd bake if youwent out to the pool or wanted to sit and read on the terrace.

If you're going to be there for a week, I'd rent a cottage or house. There are scads of places to rent in the area, and though it's rather late to be looking, you should still be able to find something.

Alternatively, take a look at the Manoir d'Hautegente, not an absolutely ideal location but well within the "right" area for touring. Or the Domaine de la Barde in Le Bugue, or La Ferme Lamy in Meyrals.

Thanks so much for your help. Based on the comments of St Cirq, I looked again at the photos of Domaine de Monrecour and agree it looks a little barren. The attractive thing is that they offer gites alongside a chateau so that you have a little of "both"- the private house and the ammenities of a hotel if you want it. Does anyone know of anything similar?

Les Charmes de Carlucet looks perfect for us! They have a lovely gite for our family. My in-laws may wish to stay in the main house to give us some privacy. We plan to book it! Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge of the property?

Hi Ira! Yes, I did check tripadvisor.com and didn't find any reviews. I did find a very positive mention of it on this site, however.
