Sardinia or Capri?

We will be traveling through Italy next summer and we are torn between Capri and Sardinia. We hear both are beautiful. We want something that offers us the best of both worlds. Beach, some night life and some great restaurants. Can anyone recommned which would be better?

Hi SFBoys, that is rather like the old saying "comparing apples to oranges".

Both islands are so different.

I will tell you this, most of the fellows that live in Italy that I know prefer to go to Capri rather then Sardinia (Sardegna in Italian). The only fellow I know that prefers Sardegna is one who loves windsurfing, which you did not mention as being something you were looking to do.

I love both islands but if I had to chose one over the other I personally would chose Capri.

Whichever island you chose, have a wonderful time!!

Both are gorgeous island, but beware: Sardinia is PACKED in Summer, despite its being VERY expensive. But the sea is wonderful it's so crystal clear that we call it "our Italian Maldives". However here are some negative sides to consider:
From July to Mid September Sardinia is packed, it's the favourite seaside resort for many italians (because of the sea, the beaches, the night life, nature etc etc).
To reach Sardinia you can either take a plane AND rent a car or take the ferry (or the hydrofoil) AND take your car on board. Having a car is basic in Sardinia, because there are so many beautiful places to see, from Olbia to Stintino passing through la MAddalena, it's a whole treasure. However from July to mid September the ferries are packed and the fares very high, so if you want to to Sardinia by ferry or hydrofoil, you'd better book much in advance, like march or february. There is Tirrenia, Grandi Navi Veloci, Moby Lines and Sardinia Ferries as ferry lines.
If you want to go to Sardinia during these Summer months, book the hotel much in advance. Lots of choices from the simple pensione to the extra chic and expensive resort.

Capri too is a very popular island, and in Summer it's packed too, but the good thing is that you can't take the car there, so you use the public means of transportation or the private boat and motor taxi companies. Capri is also a favourite among the italian and international jet-set (and Sardinia is even more, lots of italian soccer, tv, movie, fashion, politic stars go to Sardinia in SUmmer, they hang around Porto Cervo, THE POSH place os Sardinia), who meet in the Piazzetta in the evening. You're not going to find lots of sandy beaches in Capri though, lots of rocks (I still have a scar on my foot, for banging against a pointed rock in Marina Piccola when I was a child). Sardinia has lots of sandy as well as rocky beaches, and bays. There are also different colours of sand from powder white to baby pink.
So, I hope to have given you some very general highlights of both places, but if you like beaches and night life and restaurants, I'd say go for Sardinia...BUT BOOK IN ADVANCE!!!!

How much time will you have to allocate? Sardinia is a huge island, which needs at least 10 days, if the goal is to explore a little. I haven't been to Capri, but many people day trip to there or stay a few nights, right?

From what I've heard (and seen) of the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, this would be the place to go if you want a "scene," maybe comparable to what you could find in Capri. Sardinia has the best beaches that I have seen thus far in my European travels (Italy, Greece & Turkey).

THE place to find famous people in Sardinia is THE BILLIONAIRE, whose owner is Fabio Briatore. Famous are his jet-set nights there.
