Sardinia: need help picking 2 bases
My family (my husband and I are taking our 2 young adult children and their SO's) to Sardinia in June. Looking to pick 2 bases so that we can more easily explore those regions without driving hours each day. Probably will spend 3 or 4 days in each place and will be renting a house/airbnb, as well as a car.
We are interested in beautiful beaches, good food, a bit of history/archaeology. Perhaps a place to rent a stand up paddleboard or kayak. Would welcome suggestions on 2 places to base ourselves. Thanks in advance. |
Good beaches:
from Olbia up to Palau (for example Marinella, Rena Bianca, Liscis Ruja, Itriceddi, Capriccioli, Romazzino.....) around Villasimius (East of Cagliari) Chia (can get windy, with surf) Fertilia, close to Alghero airport Pelosa (North of Porto Torres, can get crowded even in June) from Olbia airport up to San Teodoro Archeological sites (not breathtaking, rather for specialists, all North and West of Cagliari): Barumini Isili Tharros Pula archeological museum of Cagliari scenic old cities: Alghero, Carloforte |
Sardina is fabulous. In the fall of 2018, we based n Alghero and Cagliari, two very different experiences. Our son did the same thing this past November with their toddler son, and they were pleased with the same choices. Here is our trip report: https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...tober-1659806/,

We had two bases on our trip to Sardinia but only saw the top half of the island. Both stays were about 4 nights each, first was Santa Teresa Gallura (flew into Olbia). That's a terrific base if you want to visit Bonifacio on Corsica. We walked the ten minutes from our hotel to the port, 40 min ferry ride, amazing views. Take your passport! The other stay was in Alghero and we flew out from there too. Of the two places, we preferred Santa Maria Gallura. Bosa was a nice place for a few hours, quite picturesque.

Sardinia: 2 or 3 bases
Thank you to those who responded - much appreciated. We will be in Sardinia for about 12 days, so I'm thinking of 3 bases: 1) near Cagliari - Pula? 2) San Pantaleo or Sta Teresa di Gallura 3) Cuglieri - about an hour from Alghero. I'm hoping that these 3 bases give us an easy way to explore the island. We'll have a car.
Ideas about these 3 bases? |
The beaches that you can reach by car on small but not too sinuous roads from San Pantaleo (5 miles or so) are among the best of Sardinia.
Count about 8 miles from Cuglieri to the closest organized beaches and about 20 miles to the archeological site of Tharros. |
We had 4 bases in Sardinia: Cagliari, Cala Gonone, Arzachena, Alghero. Four nights each. I liked Alghero a lot better than Cagliari.
In early June Cagliari (as well as the beaches in Chia, Villasimius and Costa Rei) was pretty deserted. The main season on the Island runs from July till end of August. |
I found the nuraghi, prehistoric fortresses, of Sardegna to be very interesting, and I'm not a specialist.
|
Of course, the nuraghi are interesteing; therefore I mentioned them in my post 2.
With a car, Barumini can be visited from Cagliari as well as from Cuglieri. Most Italian beaches outside tourist ghettos popular with people from abroad are deserted in early June. |
