Sardinia in early May
 

My wife and I are thinking about visiting Sardinia, after Cinque Terre, for about 5 days in mid May, taking the ferry from Genoa. We would rather not rent a car and want to leave from Cagliari to go to Naples. Could people here suggest an itinerary and some info on getting around without a car? Much appreciated.

Have you checked ferry schedules? They might not be as frequent in May.

I have always heard it described as a place you need a car, so I would start with the transport possibilities.
Early-mid May may be a little iffy for beaches, if that is what you were after.

We have visited Sardinia six times and twice to the south. Cagliari is an interesting small city enough to see in a day after that ...well Yorkshire is quite right!

Sardinia has probably the best seascapes in Europe, many of the beaches and stretches of coast are simply stunning, you can drive and drive trying to better each days beach discovery.

Mid May should give you heat in the 70s but unlike Sicily, Sardinia rarely gets very warm as it is a meeting point for the cooler Alpine air and the very warm African air. You should prepare for rain.

Along the South coast to the East is Villasimius which is a summer tourist resort with a beautiful beach, it will be quiet in May.

To the West the coast is very interesting the Roman ruins at Nora are stunning and extensive, they are beside the sea. Pula is a lovely little village with good restaurants and closeby.

The coast to the SW corner is dramatic with huge cliffs and beautiful coasts.

We have always hired cars and have little idea about the public bus service. This will complicate matters as many of the areas of outstanding coastline will not be serviced by bus, indeed much of the fun in Sardinia for us has always been finding hidden corners.

Forget the beaches.

Trains and buses between the main places rather frequent. Car or taxi necessary for small places out of the way.
