Sardinia for 4 weeks Jan/Feb?
 

Our London House Exchange didn't come to pass (sniff) so now we're considering where to go this winter.

Sardinia has been on our list for a long time....the weather looks quite good in January/February (above freezing, not too rainy) and Cagliari looks interesting (nice historical centre and big enough for lots of restaurants/bars to be open in the off season).

We would probably twin it with another Italian destination for 3 or 4 weeks - maybe Lucca. Spent 8 weeks in Rome in Jan/Feb 04 and 4 weeks in Venice/area in February in 2011 so we are familiar with Italy in the Winter.

Any comments and/or apartment suggestions in Sardinia? We'd want something in a town large enough to walk to shops, restaurants, etc. We would rent a car, but not for the entire time.

Have spent quite a bit of time in Sicily and Puglia so not considering them for this trip.

I spent a week in Cagliari in March 2008.You may want to look at my 3 trip reports on Sardinia. In Jan/Feb, all coastal places will be closed and you should indeed stay in a town : Cagliari, Alghero, Sassari or Oristano. Maybe Nuoro. You'll need a car if you want to get around (there is so much to see).
I would share my 4 weeks between 2 towns.

We have been to Sardiinia six times and I really would reconsider your trip.

Sardinia is a great summer destination, it has the best coastline in Europe and the towns are busy from May until September. However.....

The attraction starts to fade with summer, many of the coastal areas will be deathly and quite frankly there ar far better places for cultural experiences at that time of year in Europe. We have visited Sicily im winter, the weather wasn't good but there was enough cultural sights of interest.

I spend part of the year near Milano and the other part in Sardinia. If you need any advice about travelling through Sardinia,please drop me an email and if you are interested I can help you find an accommodation somewhere in Sardinia.

I think that Cagliari and Alghero are good in winter, there's always something to do or visit. And in January the weather is quite good, not cold.
I suggest you to consider both of them.
