Sardinia: Best Route from NYC?

Hello

Planning first trip to Sardinia possibly this summer.. Leaving from JFK.. What's the quickest route, which airlines??

I'm looking at the Porto Cervo area, so I assume I need to fly into Olbia Airport..

I have two kids, so the less connections the better.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Melody,

Meridiana is the main carrier that flies into Olbia (and the other Sardinia airports in Alghero and Caglieri). You could fly Delta, AA or Alitalia from JFK to Rome FCO, then Meridiana into Olbia. Easyjet is supposed to start offering service into Olbia in late May from London Gatwick.

RyanAir flies from London Stansted into Alghero, on the northwest coast. Air One flies into Alghero from Rome FCO. Alghero is a great place to visit, and this would make sense if you wanted to start your trip there.

You could also fly Alitalia to Rome FCO, and then Alitalia from FCO to Caglieri, but again, this only makes sense if you want to start your trip there.

There may be charters that offer more direct service - I don't know of any though. (Maybe someone else can help.)

My wife and I own a condo in Golfo Aranci, which is close to Port Cervo. We go there every year. We fly from Baltimore to FCO and take Meridiana to Olbia. From FCO to Olbia takes a twenty minute flight, but Meridiana is terrible with baggage check in. The wait for baggage is longer than the flight.
Porto Cervo is VERY expensive. Have you ever checked out Golfo Aranci? It's a great town, and offers a lot, besides costing 1/3 the price of Porto Cervo.

Thanks for the great info... Looks like Easyjet does fly from Gatwick, but only very early on Saturdays, can't get there from NY that early...
So it looks like it must be NY to Rome, then Meridiana for connection...

I will look into Golfo.. Any recommendations for good villa rental agencies in the Costa Smeralda area?? I need a home, not a hotel..

Thanks so much again

Fly to Berlin and then take Easy Jet from Berlin to Olbia. The flight is very early, so you might need to spend a day in Berlin.

Meridiana also flies from Milan to Olbia-mostly from Linate, but there's also at least one flight daily from Malpensa.

There are also flights on some other budget carriers from, e.g., Frankfurt, if you want other options. Look on www.whichbudget.com.
