Sardinia
 

We are planning to spend a couple of weeks in Sardinia in February (to make up for the trip we have had to cancel to Argentina).
The guide books we have found so far give a paragraph in the Italian section, and that is about beaches which have their limitations in February. So where do we go and what do we do and see please? All advice welcome.

I've just finished figuring out a non-beach Sardinian itinerary for May, and I know what you mean about guidebooks for Italy.

There are, however, a few guidebooks in English devoted exclusively to Sardinia, and I'd suggest investing in one or more. For planning, I've used the Rough Guide for pretty good coverage overall, the Cadogan Guide (covers a bit less, but is more opinionated and fun to read), Lonely Planet for practical details, and Eyewitness (DK) for pictures (but my gripe with Eyewitness Guides is that they make everything in every country look equally appealing, which isn't always helpful).

There are also some websites out there. You might start with www.sardinia.net and www.sardegna.com.

Thank you for your replies. They are very helpful/ We've got a Rough Guide to Sardinia - only one available in local book shop - but it gives a slightly negative impression for people who like to travel in winter when accommodation is closed; Sunday - everything closed; and who chicken out of driving on the right hand side of the road - OK we're British. It seems that public transport is poor and probably closed too in Winter. I expect we will have a marvellous time, we usually do as long as we are not 'packaged' but any advice can save valuable holiday time and avoid mistakes

Hello Tricia, what made you decide to stay for a couple of weeks on Sardinia in February?

I used the trains from Alghero through Sassari to Cagliari in October. The trains run through Oristano, Iglesias and Olbia too.

I think you'd be able to keep yourself busy for a couple of weeks. Especially since you'll not be interested so much in the beaches where the trains don't go.

From Alghero I took the boat over to Neptune's Grotto. Looking at the boat schedule in October it was starting to slack off, but I think I remember it running at least once a day through winter subject to weather and cancellation due to low passenger counts.

Here's a link to my trip report. Since I'm not a beach person I saw several museums and churches. I did drive a little from Cagliari through Bosa to Alghero. I didn't find it nearly as daunting as people write about on the Italian mainland. Though I have yet to drive on the "other" side myself. :-)

Take it from me, I'm familiar with it--Sardinia is a real dreary place in February.
