Hi. We just returned fom a week's stay in Sardinia.Part of the deal was a week cruising Corsika. We stayed in the north-west, very close to Alghero and had a fine time. We've heard that in July and especially August Sardinia gets crowded with tourists (mainly Italians) and prices double each hour. We felt Sardinia beeing a very pleasant place for relaxing. However, our planned tours across the island were limited, but we got along very very fine. Marvellous shores, nice people, easy to get around, but we willl recommend a rental car. Have a good stay! <BR>Bjorn, Oslo

Sardinia is a wonderful place to visit for 15 to 30 days at the end of September!!! I spent 15 days on the island in July of this year, and loved it. I particularly recommend spending two days in Cagliari, a few days on the southern coast near Cagliari (either Grand Hotel Chia Laguna or one of the numerous fine properties near Santa Margherita di Pula), and a couple of days in or around Alghero, to the northwest. Castelsardo, Nora (near Pula) and Tharros (near Oristano) also merit a quick visit. The Costa Smeralda is very expensive and very beautiful, but not absolutely essential. I believe that the Golfo di Orosei (Cala Gonone) in the east is also spectacular, though involving a bit more travel. There are several hauntingly beautiful churches scattered in the countryside near Sassari and Castelsardo, but these require transportation by car. A rental car is a big plus, but not absolutely essential. Public transportation will take you to many places, though it will take longer, and your options will be more limited.

Thanks for the replies. How did you get to Sardinia? The ferry is limited not so much in going but coming back. We leave on the 11th of October and the only ship about that time is the overnight one. We arrive at 7am in Civit....and have to get to airport for a 12:pm flight. Is it doable? Help!

You will need to catch either the 7:38 a.m. or the 8:10 a.m. train from Civitavechia to Roma Trastevere Station (NOT Roma Termini), from where you have a tight connection (less than 10 minutes) to the commuter train to the airport. Buy your through ticket at Civitavecchia. You will arrive at the airport either at 9:03 or 9:33. In case you miss the connection, the commuter train from Trastevere to the airport leaves every 15 minutes, and takes 23 minutes. Full schedules are found on the internet www.fs-on-line.com. Hope you have a sleeper accommodation on the ferry: I would not want to board a long flight after a long night on the boat without a bed! (A better solution is to fly from Cagliari, Alghero or Olbia into the Rome airport and connect to your transatlantic flight)
