Sarajevo ? Mostar ? How many days?
 

Hello All,

My family will visit Bosnia in the coming July.
Sarajevo and Mostar are the major cities that we want to visit.
Does everyone has your experience that you can share with me how long you will stay?

Any suggestion ? Please advise.

What is your interest in each city? Will you do walking tours? Go to museums? Try to sample local food at a lot of restaurants?

Mostar isn't that big. One night is probably adequate for most people, assuming you don't arrive very late the first day and/or leave early the last day (then you might stay two nights). If you have some special interest in the area that might take more time, you might add nights.

Sarajevo is a lot bigger than Mostar, but the Turkish old town isn't very big. You can take a guided tour to see some of the sites from the siege during the Bosnian war. 2-3 nights might be plenty - again, add time if you will arrive late/leave early or if you have a special interest in the area. I spent three nights and that was more than enough for me, personally. I probably could have managed with just two nights, but I didn't care that much for Sarajevo. Some people do seem to enjoy the city, but I found it a bit more touristy than expected and otherwise not that endearing.

There is more to Bosnia than Mostar and Sarajevo. On a recent driving trip, I stopped overnight in Trebinje and Jajce. I did day stops in Blagaj (for the Dervish House), in Ljubuški (for the beautiful Kravice Waterfalls), in Bihac (Una National Park and another amazing waterfall) and in Travnik (old Ottoman capitol of Bosnia). Of course, if you are taking buses and trains, it can be a challenge to reach some of these places.

I agree that one night is probably adequate for Mostar. I thought Sarajevo was much more interesting, with the Ottoman quarter, the Hapsburg quarter and the more modern sections, and would give it at least three nights/two days.

We spent 2 nights in Mostar and 3 in Sarejevo . We were travelling by train though so had one very early morning departure . That was enough time in each for us

Maybe we will stay in Mostar for 2 full days and leave there by the 19:00 train to Sarajevo.

If you mean three nights and two days for Mostar, I think you will run out of things to do.

Yes, less time in Mostar and more in Sarajevo.

It sounds as though you are going to be using public transportation. You could go to see nearby Blagaj from Mostar if you have two days there. There might be some organized bus trips, too, but I am not sure about those options. By the way, this part of the country is Herzegovina, not Bosnia

I am one who really loved Sarajevo and found plenty to do there for multiple days on two different trips. There are a number of museums and mosques to visit and we found it fascinating to stroll around the city. There are details on what we did in my trip report from 2010

I spent 2.5 days in Sarajevo and wish I had given it AT LEAST 1 more full day.

I spent about 24 hours in Mostar and, for my interests, that was right on target.
