We plan to visit the Trocadero when we're in Paris next week and we're unclear about the various museums there. Does anyone know if the Palais de Tokyo is "installations only", without a permanent collection? Have its permanent collections moved to the Musee d'Art Moderne?

There are two museums in the building called Palais de Tokyo. The Musee d'Art Moderne has both permanent and special exhibitions. The museum called Palais de Tokyo has (or at least had when I visited a couple years ago) changing exhibits, which consist of installations, paintings, sculpture, all manner of contemporary art. At least at that time, each section of the gallery would be given to a particular artist who would exhibit his or her work there.

When I visited the Musee d'Art Moderne four or five years ago they had some fabulous Matisse and Dufy paintings; I don't know if they in the permanent collection. Some of the temp exhibits were very creative and interesting. I completely enjoyed this museum.

Well, not the five paintings that were stolen yesterday!
We did visit last year, and it was lovely. What an awful shame. Truly puts me in mind of the theft at the Isabella Stewart Gardner in Boston so many years ago. EJ
