Sarah's Key - Vel d'Hiv

I loved the book (was somewhat disappointed int the ending) - this has piqued my interest in learning more about this dark period of Parisian history when we visit in a few weeks:

thought the book was better than the movie!!! it is fascinating that period of time. You might also like to read Irene nemirovsky's books and those about her.

Thank you for sharing this link. I read the book last June when I was in Paris for a month, and I couldn't put it down. I had very limited knowledge of this round-up and the complicity of the French. As I learned while there, this event was apparently buried under the surface of historical events. If you visit the Memorial de la Shoah while in Paris, you will see the actual photograhs of many of these victims along with many others. It is a haunting remembrance of a very tragic period, but one that I believe we must not forget.

Not sure if you can find it on DVD, but I highly recommend the movie "La Rafle" directed by Roselyn Bosch with Jean Reno and Emmanuelle Seigner.

It came out last year to much acclaim and was proceeded by a major television program describing the Rafle and the making of the film.

The scenario is based on a true story and the filming is apparently very realistic especially concerning the conditions in the Vel d'Hiv and the internment camps after wards. Moving film, to say the least.

Both "Sarah's Key" and "La Rafle" can be saved to Netflix but there is no release date listed.

"Sarah's Key" (with Kristin Scott Thomas) is nevertheless considered to be a superior film to "La Rafle." The Vél d'Hiv' scenes are unbearable.

Thanks for the info on this- wasn't aware of the movie "La Rafle" OR the movie version of "Sarah's Key" til I read the blog post, which was very, very moving and well-written

Thanks everyone...I just read Sarah's key a few months ago and didn't know that there is a movie...can't wait to see it. Some of the descriptions in the book were just stomach turning and heartbreaking.

Just saw the movie Sarah's Key, at the Santa Barbara Film festival. I believe that it is being released in the spring. Very well done and very sad.

It will run this weekend in San Francisco, I want to see it.

Checked the library - they have 3 books with 88 holds on it so far. Don't think I'll get it any time soon :(

Just finished the book and am hoping to see the movie soon. Didn't realize it had already been released. Also am planning a trip to Paris, July 2012. Thank you for the link, mdmom

Last spring I read the book straight through, in one sitting. It has been a long time since a book has held my interest so well. I am looking forward to the movie. My mom read the book and saw the movie and enjoyed both.

I read the book in May before our June trip -- liked it very much. I didn't realize a movie was being released, so I'm glad this thread cropped up again.

Just saw "Army of Crime," another interesting piece of Parisian history during the Occupation, based on true events. Resistance fighters from other countries living in Paris led several successful strikes against the Nazis. The French police were responsible for quelling the attacks and they stopped at nothing to please their Gestapo bosses.
There is also "Army of Shadows" (Lino Ventura, Simone Signoret, etc) about French Resistance - extremely good.
Both available on Netflix.
