Santorini - September 22 to September 25
 

We will arrive in Santorini (from Canada) on Tuesday September 22 at 11h35 am and will leave for Mykonos on Friday September 25 at 11h50 am.

We are staying at Ikies

We will be on our honeymoon and we are in our late 20's. We are not really the museum/church types, but we like to walk around, take pictures, eat the local food and treats, have a drink and people watch

Any advice on how to plan our 3 days?

Tuesday - September 22 relax at hotel/pool/explore

Wednesday - September 23 explore/winery tour we heard there was a good winery tour, does anyone have the information?

Thursday - September 24 explore/boat tour again, we heard there was a nice boat tour, does anyone have the information?


Other then the above, any other recommendation?

We will take a Ferry to Mykonos on the 25th, where do we buy tickets? Should we get these now?

Visit the archaeological site of Ancient Thera above Kamari Beach. Great views from up there.

You can buy your ferry tickets when you first arrive at the Athens Airport from the travel desk of Amphitrion Holidays in the Main Hall between exit/entry doors 2&3. They're open 24/7. No need to book further in advance than that in late September. You can also book them on Santorini from a travel agency such as Pelican Travel in Fira. Or you can go to the Hellenic Seaways website and book them there to be picked up at the ferry port on Santorini.

If we buy ferry tickets at Amphitrion Holidays at the airport, will we get the actual tickets then, or will we have to pick them up at the ferry port? If we have to pick them up at the ferry port--is this easy to do? Can you just arrive a few minutes early and get the tickets on the day of your trip?

Picking them up at the ferry port shouldn't be difficult in September since the crowds won't be anywhere near as large then as they are earlier in the summer. Give yourselves at least 1/2 hour after arrival at Santorini's port to pick them up and make your way to the ship. The port is small and it's easy to find your way to the departure shed which is all the way on the left end of the wharf.

I did the Volcano Sunset Cruise, but there are other choices as well plus some hikings since you like walking.

we went out to the volcanic island
it was ok
not all that spectacular
if you go out to the hot springs - be careful not to wear a bathing suit that you might stain - wear an old one
the water is really cold after the springs
you have to dive from the boat to swim a few metres - 100 at the most - maybe only 50
then swim back to the boat

go visit the red black and white pebble beaches
and definitely do the walk from fira to oia - a few easy hours then catch bus back
it is so gorgeous walking the clifftops and perfectly safe

The walk sounds like a great way to start a day...

if we don't plan on jumping in the water, would the volcano sunset cruise still be worth it? What was the cost and where would you buy the tickets?

I was thinking, 1 day we could take the walk to Fira...have lunch there....bus back, relax in afternoon and then take the sunset cruise....

the following day, we could do the winery tour...

The cruise is fine even without the swimming - I did not either because my swimming suit is white and new :) The stop at the hot springs was just for 30 minutes.

We bought the tickets from Fira, from a travel agency in the main street. I do not remember the name but there are many agencies offering the sunset cruise. We got the one on the Aphrodite sailing ship, it was a really pretty boat! The cost was about 45 euros, it included dinner on board and lasted about 4 hours.

We did not do an official winery tour, but we went for some wine-tastings, I recommend you the wineries of Sigalas and Gavalas. You should try the Vinsanto, it is a sweet wine that is produced uniquely in Santorini.

While it is highly likely that the good old winemakers of Santorini can justly claim to be the originators of Vin Santo, and the Italians merely brilliant adapters of the process, it is still the case that Santorini does not uniquely produce Vinsanto sweet wine, and hasn't for many centuries, although no two regions (Italy has several) produce identical versions.

Avoid riding the donkeys up the very steep path from the Port. The animals are not well looked after and have been the subject of lots of adverse publicity.

will do, thanks for the advice. there is some sorth of "chair lift" to bring you to the top right? I heard walking up is not that great either (i.e. where there donkeys there is donkey sh....)

If you're arriving by ferry you won't be at the port where the cable car is located. Your options for transport from the ferry port are private transfer, bus and taxi. Taxi from the port to Ikies is 25 euro, by bus it's 3.4 euro each with a change in Fira for the bus to Oia which passes right by Ikies.

FYI-across from Ikies is Sigalas, a small award-winning winery.

We are not arriving by Ferry, but by plane....from the airport, does the same apply? (i.e. we just take a taxi that will bring us almost at the door of Ikies?)

Same applies to arriving by air, no cable car, no donkeys. The taxi from the airport to Ikies is 25 euro.

By the way, it's pronounced 'ee-KEE-ess', not 'EYE-kees'. (so you won't confuse the taxi driver)
