Santorini Question: Airport ~Fira~ Oia
Hi Fodorites,
My 20-something daughter is meeting some cousins in Santorini in June. They will be staying together in Oia. She arrives by plane at around noon, about 6 hours before they do. Would you recommend she go straight to Oia , or stop first for a few hours in Fira? She will be traveling with one back
pack. What would you do? Her goals for the trip are basically sun and sand and food and people. Not so much ruins or hiking or museums.. Thanks!

She may not have chosen wisely. Dan Torino has great ruins and wineries. It is not a sun and sand island (for me at least). And it’s very expensive. Could they switch to Crete? Or maybe take a ferry the next day to Folegandros or Naxos?

If she takes the bus she'll have to take one to Fira to catch the next one to Oia, and depending on where the hotel is and she gets off at the Oia bus square she'll still have to locate the hotel and perhaps have a long walk in the June heat. A taxi will eliminate all this and the driver can call ahead to the hotel for where to drop her off so someone can meet her and guide her to her room. Just make sure she has the hotel's phone number. The taxi will cost around €30 but it will be worth it.

And by the way, even though the beaches are black sand/grit/pebbles and get very hot the water is still divine. Not only that, the best swimming on the island is below Oia at the end of the seawall that begins on the wharf in Amoudi Bay. This is what she'll find there: https://tinyurl.com/y954scy8

The buses on Santorini were cheap from memory, a couple of euros. That makes a big difference compared to the taxi fare if your daughter is on a budget. The layout of hotels in Oia is very confusing at first, mostly because they are up and down a steep hillside with a lot of stairs and walkways. If she does get the bus, she should try and get some instructions from the hotel before she leaves about where to go after getting off the bus at Oia. Or try and check on Google maps so she knows what is next door or close by. The usual roads with street numbers you find in cities doesn't really exist there.
Going straight to Oia, instead of hanging around Fira, is good advice. She can check in (unless hotel staff are on siesta which happened to us in Oia - we bought an ice-cream and sat in the shade to wait and change into something cool then explore a bit. Oia is beautiful, I think she will love it.

Avoid Red Beach. It's very dangerous because of falling rocks from earthquake tremors. Visitors stubbornly ignore the posted warning sign and one of these days someone is going to be killed there.

She is staying with cousins who have already rented a house for their family - so Santorini it is!
