Santorini or Mykonos? That is the question...
 

My best friend and myself are two 26 year old girls. We are traveling to Greece for 4 nights on the tail end of a 2 week tour of Israel. Would you recommend we spend our time in Mykonos or Santorini and why?

Your suggestions are MUCH appreciated. If you feel strongly about a hotel or city please include that information.

It depends on what your interests are, but I much preferred Santorini. You will find the iconic photos there in the town of Oia (take the city bus to that end of the island, or rent a scooter or car). You can wander the streets for hours. Mykonos is a very gay-friendly island and they have the typical shopping, some windmills, and the best baklava I've ever eaten, so it's not bad. I just preferred the beauty of Santorini, and it seemed there was more to do and see there. Friends of ours rented motor scooters and had a great time with them as well. the food was great both places.

Hi Allie - I agree with the above poster - it depends on your interests.

If you want scenery, Santorini wins hands down for the spectacular views around the caldera.

But Mykonos has much better beaches if that's what you want (- and Mykonos town is very pleasant in the evenings).

If you want to visit a new old looking Greek town/village, Santorini would win hands down. Spent only a day there on a day trip from Crete this May. You can always make a day trip to Mykenos.
However, if you want to party, Mykenos would be the place to be.

These are all such great responses. Thank you! With that being said, if we were to stay in Mykonos, would we want to stay on the beach or in town? Also, is it possible to take a ferry to Santorini for the day from Mykonos? Any information is again much appreciated!

Allie - Beach or town on Mykonos? Your choice ... :)

Most people spend the day on the beaches then head into town for the evening - but you can do it just as easily in reverse.

The island is small - so wherever you stay you're probably not more than 10-20 mins bus ride from town.

The most popular beaches are on the south coast - and several are connected by ferry from Plati Gialos. The north coast beaches are undeveloped and quieter.

If you prefer to stay on the beach there are several options. I'd probably choose between Plati Gialos, Psarou, Ornos, Agios Ioannis ...

I know Santorini is possible as a day-trip from Naxos, so I think it would be possible from Mykonos too in high season. Hopefully someone else can confirm.

You can´t make a daytrip from Mykonos to Santorini. You have to stay a night.
