Santorini Oia Hotel

Narrowing down our hotel or apartment list. Like so many others, we know we want to stay in Oia, we want a caldera view, and we would prefer a private balcony. We don't care if it is a hotel or self-catering, as long as it's clean and has a fabulour view. Would prefer to keep our cost between $150-200 US per night, but would consider splurging if necessary. My husband and I willl be there in mid-May for 4 nights. We would like to be able to walk to town for dinner 2 nights as well as walk down to Amoudi for dinner 1 or 2 nights. Is there a location that is best for these 2 options or does it really make a difference? The layout of the cliffs and roads is a bit confusing for someone who has never been to Santorini. We like getting excercise before and after eating. Is the walk down to the harbor really difficult? We are in our fifties and in good shape. Thanks for any advice!

It doesn't really make much difference where in Oia you stay. It's quite small and everything is close to everything else. You can walk from one end to the other of the heart of the village, the pedestrian-only pathway, in 30 minutes or less, IF you aren't tempted to stop along the way to shop or admire the amazing views!

There are 238 steps down to Amoudi. Each is about 3-4 strides deep and slightly inclined, so walking down is easy, although it can be jarring on the knees. Walking back up is a challenge, as I'm sure you can imagine. But the restaurants will gladly order a taxi for you if you so desire for €10. The walk up after a full meal is a good way to work it off as long as you have strong legs and the necessary stamina.

$200 = €153. For that take a look at the websites for Olympic Villas, Thea Studios, Rimida Villas, Kyma Villas, Filotera Villas, Delfini Hotel, Chelidonia Villas, Lena's House, Villa Kallisti, House Nicoletta, Old Oia Houses, Lucky Homes, Golden Sunset Villas, Marizan Villas, Theodora Suites and Fotinos Houses.

For a little more check Atrina Houses, Strogili Houses, Nostos Apartments, La Perla Villas, Aris Caves, Esperas Houses and Fanari Villas.

You should also know that just today Olympic Air sent out an email to their newsletter subscribers with this message:

"Olympic Air provides 50,000 seats on our entire network at competitive prices for travel from 01 May 2012 to 30 June 2012.

One way domestic fares to Athens start from €38 whether fares from Athens start as from €58 and one way domestic fares to/from Thessaloniki start from €39.

One way international fares to Athens start from €42 whether fares from Athens start as from €50.

All rates are valid for one way travel for flights on Olympic Air aircraft and include all taxes and relevant charges for bookings through Olympic Air’s website between March 15th & March 19th. Public Service Obligation routes are excluded."

This map might help. The grey strips are footpaths. The white strips are roads and driveways. http://www.santorini-hotels.info/san...ni-oia-map.htm

Brotherleelove recommended The Old Oia Houses when we were going last summer and we couldn't have been happier. It was nice, quaint, clean and the price was right within our budget. The owners were wonderful and made sure we were happy when we originally ended up in a cave house that had a limited view. They moved us to the Captain's house that not only have great views but had a veranda and a rooftop terrace.
