Santorini in June

We will be arriving in Santorini from Crete towards the end of June. I would like to book a hotel before we arrive but as I cannot get reliable information about ferry schedules (or flights!) I am reluctant to do this. What are the chances of getting accommodation (preferably with caldera view) without prebooking at this time of year? Has anyone had any experiences with not booking at this time of year? How busy is it likely to be?

Leigh, I've only been to Santorini once, so my experience is limited. But when I attempted to book rooms in March for a June/July trip, I found that many of the hotels I was interested in were already full. (Perhaps others who have been there more often can speak to whether my experience was typical.)

About the ferries, I know what you mean. I found it nearly impossible to find accurate ferry information this early in the year. I ended up flying from Athens to Santorini, and from Santorini to Mykonos, on Olympic.

Booking in March, I even had trouble getting on one of those flights. I ended up working, via e-mail, with Likouris Travel in Mykonos, and they were able to get me a seat.

Likouris Travel, by the way, was very helpful. (This is not an advertisement!) I also have good things to say about Dilos.com.

When I went to Greece it wasn't high season so we didn't make reservations in advance. But I used this site http://www.greektravel.com/ which I think is the best around. You will find EVERYTHING! Matt gives perfect recomendations, links for reservations, ferry info, etc.

Hi Leigh,

I agree that some of the hotels with the great views will be booked, so make your reservations now. The ferries are of a concern, becasue they do not know their schedules until the first of the month. I have used dilos.com twice for reservations of hotels and other things. They are helpful and will probably be able to tell you about the ferries. Travel angencies in Greece seem to get you a better price for hotels than if you deal directly with the hotel. Good luck and you will have a fabulous time.

i posted a similar question early last june asking for a more precise schedule for traveling around the cyclades...my impression is that: 1)accurate schedule doesn't come out until april/may...2) and even when it's available online (http://www.gtp.gr), it's not exactly precise as i saw significant differences by the time i arrived on the islands..

my suggestion is, take a: 1) plane: relatively inexpensive and less likely to cancel out on you; 2) catamaran: find out how frequently the ferries (slow!)/catamarans (faster) take off between crete and santorini and if there are 2+ trips daily, that should be fairly safe...(though i often see services suspended/delayed on pretty benign weather...)

i didn't start booking until april for my trip in june so i think you still have some good time left...booking in fira might be slightly more difficult but i wouldn't say it's impossible...if you are willing to try imerovigli (around 30min by foot from fira), you can still get an excellent view of the caldera with many hotel rooms available...

overall, i had an easier time booking flights and hotels in the greek islands anywhere else (esp france/spain)
