Santorini Greece Trip Report

We visited Santorini in late May and I am just getting around to doing my pictures. I have not even thought about writing the trip report yet but then I discovered that Lolly had been doing some writing in quiet moments so she gave me permission to share her thoughts on our time in Santorini.

Finikia, Santorini

A braying donkey and a biological clock still set for Pacific Time joined forces to get me out of bed at 5:30 AM that first morning in Finikia. Stillness and soft morning light met me and my first cup of Nescafe on our balcony overlooking the Aegean. I sat soaking in the fertile plain that stretched out below me to the sea. Row upon row of grapes, tomatoes and onions. The breeze is very cool and I am wrapped up in a wooly blanket relishing the coziness and the hot coffee. There goes the donkey again, and one answers from across the fields. The birds start darting around and twittering. A goat bell clunks, donkey bells dingle softly, and there is a communal flutter of wings as a group of homing pigeons rise from the yard to the roof of the coop and back again. A rooster makes an attempt to wake up the world and then seems to decide not to bother. I realize I hear no mechanical sounds at all. No metal on metal, no internal combustion, no digital recordings. It's quiet except for the morning sounds of creation. Thoughts seem to come up out of my heart instead of bouncing around between my ears. In this stillness it is easier to talk to God.

Studio Georgios

That early morning was only interrupted by the warm sound of human voices and the occasional barking dog as the day wore on. Geogi's Studios in Finikia is nestled into the hillside on the edge of the old village. Located about a 10 minute walk from the closest car park, George brings Eustace the donkey out to carry your luggage to the hotel. Eustace wears a muzzle, not because he bites, but because he like to eat along the way, which tends to slow down progress to the hotel.

The hotel is classic white and blue. I'm not sure how many studios there are (maybe seven.) There are multiple levels, private balconies and it was hard to get a sense of how many people were really here. George and his wife, Tania, are welcoming and friendly and we felt immediately accepted and at home. Our unit had a kitchenette and when Tania discovered that Stanbr likes to cook for me when we are in Greece she appeared with a bottle of oil and two fresh courgettes from her garden. (And he did an amazing job with them too!) The rooms were sparkling clean. The lady who cleaned the unit even lined up my various skin care bottles from smallest to largest!

As I write this George is saddling up Eustace for our journey back to the car park. I feel a little sad to be leaving and thankful that our Greek adventure has only just begun.

Greece can be magical transporting us from one island to another and back centuries. Thanks for your comments.
