Santorini cheap eats
Am off to Santorini next month staying for four nights in Oia. The accomodation is self catering, but we intend to eat out each night. Rather alarmed at reports coming back from some friends of ours about the eye watering prices charged by some restaurants in the town and the inability to find good, reasonably priced food and wine. Considering that they are both doctors and not normally unduly concerned about prices, this is now a matter of concern to us. We don't mind a splurge for one night, but were hoping to eat reasonably for the other three nights with a budget of say $ 75.00 per night including wine. Are we right to be worried and can anyone offer suggestions as to where to eat good quality meals in Oia at sensible prices, preferably with that fantastic view.

i am afraid fantastic view and low prices are not compatible... Usually you pay for everything that has a fantastic view, be it a hotelroom or a meal.....
My absolute favorite restaurant in Oia is Anemomilos, owner has also a hotel under the same name.
They cook delicious greek kitchen at really low prices.
This is the restaurant where locals go to eat too!! and that's has something to say.
Wine in Greece is often a problem... bottled wine is often overpriced.... they are selling wines at the ridiculous price of 25 euro when you can find them in every supermarket for 7 euros....
Nikolas in Fira is another simple restaurant with delicious greek food, even though ppl are waiting on the line sometimes
to get a table.

There are plenty of places to eat for all budgets; the tourist places in Oia are bound to be expensive. Nikolas in Fira is a good option, so is Spitidakos on the main road in Fira. In Oia, reasonable meals can be had at Amoudi Bay which is a walk down to the small harbour where there are a few restaurants and the view to the sea and up to Oia above is lovely. Kyprida in Oia did not break the bank either, the cuisine is Cypriot which can make a nice change. They do have views from Kyprida. If you are staying in a place with a caldera view, you can also have takeaways to eat on your verandah, Edwins Pizza for instance and buy a bottle of wine at a supermarket. Other cheap eats in Oia can be found around the bus station and any bakery.

There are several inexpensive restaurants in Oia that don't get the respect they deserve. Try Laokasti Restaurant across from the Church of St. George and the "Hair and Soul" salon at the beginning of the pedestrian-only pathway. Santorini Mou Taverna is fun and the Anemomilos Hotel restaurant near the Perivolas Market is also inexpensive and worth your time. In the heart of the village is Skala with a view of the caldera, and Blue Sky restaurant near the bus square. For a meal at sunset try Kastro at the top of the steps leading down to Amoudi Bay, reservations required and table 2 is best if you can get it. On the wharf in Amoudi are 4 fish tavernas. Katina's is my favorite but they're all good. Be sure to ask the price of the fish you order as it's priced by weight. If you're in the mood for pizza, Pizza Edwin is the place to go.

Just got back from four days in Oia and thought I would add a note to thank the people who gave advice. Food is available for all budgets, but as already stated above, the problem is that some restaurants seem to want to charge 30+ euros for a bottle of local wine when you can walk up to the supermarket and buy the same bottle for 6 euros. For lunches, ate at Blue Sky (good and reasonably priced), Katina's (excellent and reasonably priced, but the walk back up the hill is a killer), Nectar & Ambrosia (a little pricey but really good) and Argonaut by the Medical Centre (half the price of the places on the front and excellent food). For evening meals, we booked table 2 at Kastro which gave us a fantastic view of the sunset (the food was not as good as the view and bit pricey - avoided the bottled wine), Roka (hard to find, but lovely restaurant with nice food and with cheap house wine), Thalami (even though this has a wonderful view of the caldera, still reasonably priced with carafes of house wine. Food very good) and finally, returned to Nectar & Ambrosia as a splurge on our last night (food of a much higher quality than elsewhere, but expensive). Thanks again to everyone for their help.
