Santorini and other islands
We are cruising next month and would like recommendations for the must-see sights in Santorini, Mykenos, Rhodes and Katakolon/Olympia. We prefer half-day touring as my mother cannot walk too well. Full day is okay if amazing!! We are in port the whole day at each destination.
Thanks in advance!

Tough to see the sites in a day at these places. Lots of hilly, rough walking. Perhaps you can hire a taxi driver at the port when you arrive and have them drive you around. In Santorini, cruise ships are greeted by donkeys for the ride into town.
What to see depends on your interests. Do you just want to view the scenery, or visit archaeological sites or shop?

Hi Vera,
Archeological sites mainly. Are there taxis that can get down to the dock? I can get a half day tour in an upscale taxi for about 150 Euros according to one website. Am I better waiting until we arrive and take a taxi off the dock? Is there a do not miss archeological site? Thanks

If you dock where I think most cruise ships dock, you'll have to ride the cable car or the donkey to the top of the hill and walk a couple of streets over to where the taxis are. But I'm sure the cruise company can help you with that. For archaeology don't miss the museum on the main street of Thera and the Minoan ruins at Akrotiri. You can get a lot of info from the Greek national archaeological site (Not the exact name). Just try googling Akrotiri, Santorini and see what comes up. Many people theorize that Santorini was Plato's Atlantis. They think when the volcano that is now the caldera blew, it wiped out Minoan civilization on Crete and the outpost on Santorini. Others say the dates don't compute. Either way it is fascinating history.

Thanks Vera. From the guidebook I see that Akrotiri is closed Mondays!!!! That of course is when we are there! Is there anything to see from the outside or do you have to enter in order to see the ruins. I know that sounds like an odd question, but there are ruins viewable from parking lots!!!

What a shame! I don't think you can see much from the exterior because it is all fenced off. If you're there on Monday the museum is probably closed, too. Too bad, but I trust you'll be in Aathens and can go to the national archaelogical museum there.
