Santorini and Crete?
My daughter, age 21, and I, ageless, will be arriving in Athens from Istanbul early in June. We can't decide whether to spend five days in Santorini or divide the time between Santorini and Crete or some other island. We do love to see the historical sights but also want to visit beaches, Any suggestions?

Having only 5 days, Bobbie, I wouldn't divide time between Santorini and another island (anyways, by no means whatsoever, Crete!). Some visitors divide time between Santorini and Mikonos but normally with a week to spare.

Santorini has a dramatic landscape, two very nice towns (Fira and Oia), excellent sightseeing opportunities (Akrotiri, Ancient Thira, Mount Ilias, Pyrgos and monastery, a boat trip in the caldera and to Thirassia, etc), good nightlife, reasonable eating out possibilities, etc. But if you're looking also for nice white sandy beaches ... you won't find them! The best beach is undoubtely the black Kamari, lined with fun bars, kiosks, shops and hotels. The black Perissa beach is more of the same, but lower scale (also, Perissa's is volcanic sand, not rock). The other few beaches in the island are not worth mentioning (just south of Akrotiri there's a quiet beach with red sand). The best way to explore the island is to rent a mini car (unless you feel confortable on a scooter :-).

Paulo

Hi. I haven't been to Greece in 10 years, but since it's one of my favorite places, I feel compelled to answer anyway. It's probably best to stay in one or the other island, given that you'd spend nearly a day traveling between (unless you fly). As was already said, Santorini is dramatic--it is truly like all the photos you've seen. It's particularly spectacular to approach via ship.
No, the beaches are not beautiful (the water is, but not the sand/rocks), but I am a beach person and I was satisfied (but they may be far busier than when I was there years ago). There is lots to do on Santorini--you won't lack for activities or places to eat.
If you do end up going to Crete, though, I suggest getting out of the cities--try the southern coast where there are some of the more typical small seaside villages, and beaches. (And Knossos.)
Have fun! (But warn your daughter about the men!)

I'd go for Santorini every time - the beaches aren't as good as Crete but the rest of the island makes up for that - it is one of my favourite places in the world

Visited Greek Islands September 99" Santorini is a must. Beaches are mostly all rocky. Black rock, red rock, & just rocks in general, but we still loved it. If your looking for sandy beaches, I would recommend Naxos (just a ferry ride away). Many places to stay right on the beach. Very sandy & brilliant blue water. And lots of sites to see around the island too. But you would have to rent a car. In September, my husband & I found it to be a bargin, $25 for a room on the beach, can't beat it. (but no air conditioning).. We also visited Mykonos. Found it to be most expensive island & mostly revolving around party/nightlife. Enjoy your trip!
