Santorini - 2 days in September
We will be in Santorini for 2 days in September (as part of the last leg of our 5 week Europe trip).
Its our first time to Greece and out next (and final) step of our trip will be Athens, before flying back to the US. We will be flying here from Rome. What are some of the must-do\must-see activities in Santorini ? We are mostly interested in nature, scenic views, relaxing and seeing the local sights. Any tips, suggestions on how 2 days can be best spent here ? Thanks all in advance ! |
There are 2 archaeological sites, Akrotiri and Ancient Thira. I've yet to confirm that Akrotiri is back up to full operation or if they're still constructing the new enclosure. If they're still working you won't be able to see much if anything. Ancient Thira is at the top of the mountain above Kamari Beach. You can hire a taxi or rent a car or take an organized tour. There's a small museum in Fira, the main village. The village of Oia on the north end of the island offers the most traditional and unspoiled setting on the cliffs overlooking the caldera. Many people go there for the sunsets alone. Shopping is good in just about every village, with Fira and Oia topping the list.
There's a cliffside hiking trail between Fira and Oia as well as one between Perissa and Kamari Beaches if you're in top shape. Have a drink at sunset at Franco's Bar in Fira. Enjoy a gourmet meal in Oia at "1800" or "Nectar." |
Thanks brotherleelove - what would be a good place to marvel at the whitewashed houses - or is this common everywhere on the island ?
Any recommendations on a good but reasonably priced ( < US$100) hotel ? |
Any cliffside village will do, but I am partial to and always recommend Oia.
Here's a link to some good hotels: http://www.santorinihotels.com/hotels.php The Anemomilos Hotel has a view of the caldera and a swimming pool, and the price is reasonable. |
I have been to Santorini several times and have not seen any authentic white washed Greek houses on Santorini although I am sure they are there somewhere, however, I have seen hotels being whitewashed for the coming tourist season while walking the path that the donkeys take along the cliffside to the path down to the harbour in Thira heading west toward Oia. A true Kodak moment. I agree that Akrotiri is worth seeing. So are the many bars and rest. of Oia and Thira.
