Santa Margherita Ligure - accomodation

Can't decide between Villa Gnocchi and Hotel Fasce - has anyone been to both?

Sorry, haven't been to both, but we did stay at Hotel Fasce three years ago and were very pleased. The rooms were great and breakfast was better than many other places we've stayed. If I recall there was also a rooftop garden with a view of the sea and the surrounding hills.

Stayed at Villa Gnocchi about three weeks ago and would find it hard to fault. Strictly speaking its not really in SML, but going out of town on the road to San Lorenzo. Difficult to find if you are driving, but if arriving by train then a short taxi ride up a winding road. The big plus of Villa Gnocchi is that it has a hillside setting overlooking SML and along the coast to the CT which is really quite spectacular. The owner Roberto Gnocchi is very helpful speaking good english. He is also an excellent cook providing the simple but tasty meal served each evening on the terrace with aforementioned view. The wine is good quality and cheap at Euros 6.00 per bottle. You can just have room and breakfast, but most people opt for the three course meal. Half board was, I think, about Euros 100.00 per night for the two of us which is not too bad as this part of the Italian Riviera is pricey. From the back of the property there is a path which runs down into SML which takes 20 minutes going down and considerably longer coming back up! There is, however, a bus which runs from the seafront in SML and drops you off in San Lorenzo with about a 5 minute walk back to the property. Don't know when you are going, but Roberto told us that he was full for the rest of this season. Ask for a room with a balcony. Try the walk down to Portofino which takes 2 to 3 hours and then get the boat back to SML. We had a wonderful time there and in the CT later that week. Afraid that I did not see the Hotel Fasce so cannot comment, but other posters on this site recommend it, so may be worth a try.
