sanest way from Venice airpot

Any advice on sanest, easiest, most cost effective to get from Venice airport to Hotel San Moise near Piazza San Marco will br greatly appreciated.

Alilaguna water bus--about 10E each and about 1:10--drops at SanMarco stop.

Sanest & easiest-water taxi to your door-cost about 85 euros-ouch.

More cost effective alilaguna (water bus) at 10euros/person go to alilaguna.com for info. Don't remember how far the San Moise is from the alilaguna stop at San Marco.

Is the water taxi 85 e per person or per boat? I believe I read where the boat can hold 6 people and you can share with others and split the cost. Anyone do this?

There were NINE of us, with luggage, in our water taxi from the airport to within a few yards of our hotel. Maybe $100, two years ago. Money well spent, in my opinion.

Per boat. But you all have to be picked up and let off at the same place or there will be an additional charge. Like taxi cabs most places.

Thanks for the clarification. Now for a question re luggage. My husband wants me to take a carry on bag for TWO WEEKS. I have done it before, can do it again, but would rather take my bag that is one size larger than standard carryon (Travel Pro). He says I will have trouble getting around with it in Venice - i.e. on and off the vapperatto. What do you think? I say take the water taxi and let the driver lug it on and off.

If you were going to be taking your suitcase on and off a vaporetto several times a day, I'd say it would make a difference. But once when you arrive and once when you leave would be nothing but a temporary inconvenience. And if he is a worthy husband, he'll help you if you have trouble.

Even very large suitcases won't sink the vaporetto: you can roll them on and off, just be careful not to hit fellow passengers.

Ronda Sep 9th, 2003 04:05 PM

GAC - good to know you can roll them right onto the boat!

Oh Rufus--you are thoughtful, however, in this family you have to carry your own suitcase. Often we switch and I take his smaller one and he carries my larger one. We usually travel on business and, therefore, he is loaded with his own gear - computer, camera.

One year we went to London in winter and I took a REALLY big suitcase . He did drag it up and down the underground stairs, but he said I had to learn to pack lighter and take less. And I have. I just like taking more than I need so I have a choice! The weather can be so changable this time of year.

We're supposed to carry our own suitcases as well. But we do normally trade. Mrs. Fly isn't really at all over indulgent in packing, but she does pack a good deal more than I do.

I love it when my husband tries to get me to take a smaller suitcase and then wants to put some of his clothing in MY larger suitcase. lol
