San Sebastian to Barcelona

We want to visit San Sabastian and Barcelona this summer. How long of a drive is it between these cities? Does anyone have ideas of a good place to stop overnight between San Sabastian and Barcelona? Thanks.

What are the pros and cons of driving from San Sebastian to Barcelona through France or Spain?

I know I'm going to get a lot of heat from this but I traveled from Barcelona to San Sebastian and went into France a couple of times and couldn't wait to get back to Spain. France was more expensive, more congested and more attitude. I took a circuitous route and had a great time. I traveled in mid september. BS

We did this last June and it is a very easy drive 5.5 to 6 hours on a fast highway. You don't really need a stopover if you don't want to waste a night. But there are plenty of little towns along the way and Zamora is about half way. Going though France is much longer and mountainous.

We stayed in Pamplona -- drove North to SS stayed a few days, and after a few days in Pamplona drove south to Barcelona. We had planned on stopping in Zaragoza on the way down but we're so glad we didn't -- there's too much to see in BCN to screw around.

1. If you can, go to Asador Epeleta (15-20 min N of Pamplona) for the best friggin steaks in the whole world.

2. Make sure you have a very good map of BCN. Driving around SS, Pamplona, and down to BCN wasn't at all a problem, but once we hit Barcelona it was a nightmare just trying to get to the car rental. The mappy results were way off and didn't work. Our regular tourist maps of BCN didn't extend to the fwy we were on so when mappy was inaccurate, we were driving "off the map". The last 7 miles should have taken us 15 minutes and it took us more than an hour.

This was one of best trips of my life, however, and SS and BCN are incredible cities that I fell in love with.

Unless you plan to spend a few days enjoying the countryside, fly and forget about driving. The drive from Zaragoga to Barcelona is long and boring at best.
