We plan to fly from Madrid to SS on a Monday, rent a car at the airport and keep it for the week while visiting the Basque area. Then, we want to drop it off back in SS on Sunday before flying back to Madrid where we are staying near the airport before our Monday morning flight back to the US.

The problem seems to be dropping off the rental car on a Sunday at the airport near SS. Does anyone know off hand any rental car companies open on a Sunday?

Hertz, AVIS and Europcar all have offices at the airport, which is in Hondarribia. You can also book through Auto Europe if you want to save a little money on the rental.

You might want to consider the much larger airport in Bilbao, 1 hour from San Sebastián by car. Much more options and usually cheaper to fly Madrid-Bilbao.

Several car hire companies in Bilbao airport, open from about 7:30 am to 11:30 pm on Sundays.
