San Sebastian advice
 

Hi Fodorites,
We are staying at the Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastian in September , we intend to get a hire car in Biarritz to continue the next part of the journey. Question is: whats the easiest way to get to Biarritz from San Seb ?

Question two: We want to spend a day in Bilbao, does anyone have a recommendation for a guide and car ?

There is direct bus service. And unless the trains have changed you go from Donostia to Hendaye and then switch for Biarritz.

The Tren Eskro - a commuter train that leaves all the time and goes to Hendaye, the French border station with trains from there to Biarritz (actually to a bus a few miles out of Biarritz with connecting shuttle buses I believe.)

And it is a nice ride - going right down the main street of some Basque villages. Like a metro - just buy tickets when leaving.

there is also limited mainline service to Hendaye from Donosatia's mainline RENFE station.

The Tren Eskro is cheaper and leaves right from the town center.

The most easy would be Direct bus with Pesa Bus in 75 minutes. Leaves San Sebastian bus station twice a day, at 9am and 2.30pm: http://www.pesa.net/pesa/horariosBD/...os.php?lang=en

Regarding a guide in Bilbao, you should take a look at mikelg from Bilbao's profile on this forum. He knows the area inside out and have provided excellent info about Bilbao and the Basque Country on fodor's for some ten years. http://www.fodors.com/community/profile/mikelg/

If you're staying at the Maria Cristina, then I'm sure you can arrange a taxi or have the hotel arrange a private transfer to Biarritz. It's less than 30 minutes by cay and you can leave whenever you want. If you want to arrange you're own private transfer, then check out Suital in San Sebastian (suital.es).

Eusokotren is a delightful narrow-gauge inter-urban train going out each way from San Sebastien - even to Hendaye, France to the SNCF station there.

The TOPO is fine, but if one is staying at the Maria Cristina, they can readily afford to take a private transfer to Biarritz to pick up their rental car.
