Thanks for any help ___________________________________________ My Travelogues & Photographs http://www.bangor.ac.uk/~fos007/travel.htm |
Hi Colin,
Have not been to San Marino. However, in one day you could visit: Bologna Siena Pisa and Lucca Orvieto |
San Marino wouldn't be on top of my list for a daytrip from Florence. It's ok, the site of the castle is picturesque, but it's thoroughly touristy, full of coach parties from Rimini and not worth the long drive IMO. There are many places in Tuscany that's worth a stop. If you are looking a bit further, I would go for Umbria, like Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio or Urbino in Marche. I also did a nice trip to Ravenna to look at the mosaics. Fairly easy drive over quiet roads over the hills, and as you get closer you travel through extensive apple orchards with a chance to buy fresh products. About 2 hours.

I've always wanted to visit San Marino as I found it fascinating that it is it's own little principality in the middle of Italy.
However, unless someone says "IT'S A MUST" then I'll probably leave it for another visit. It is someway down my list of Italian places to visit! I may look into doing Sienna as an excursion. (I'm doing Pisa on my day of arrival, and hoping to do Lucca on my day of departure.) Thanks a lot for your replies. _______________________________________ My Travelogues & Photographs http://www.bangor.ac.uk/~fos007/travel.htm |
It is along drive to San Marino from Florence. I would wait and do San Marino when/if you go to Rimini.

To all: Hve been into San Marino, 3 x
for one over nite, and have it loaded shoulder to shoulder with tourists, mostly from the UK and their main purchases are the liquors which are sold at reasonable prices. However after in the late afternoon after the main tours have departed it changes into a very beautiful place with some wonderful scenery and sunsets. All three times had wondereful sunsets and Rist. LaTaverna and Ceasare, were very good... Richard of LaGrange Park, Il.. |
I agree with Richard. Don't go unless you can stay overnite. We just sort of stumbled on San Marino, found a hotel, and were totally enchanted with how lovely it was after all the "tourists" -:) departed.
