San Gimignano Hotels

We're going back to SG in May and can't get a reservation where we've stayed before (LaCisterna.) We're looking at the Antico Pozzo, Bel Soggiorno and Leon something (full name escapes me and I'm at work without my books!!!) Any comments or comparisons?? We particularly like a room with a balcony or terrace for that late afternoon glass of wine---do any of these have that? Grazie (Of course, any other suggestions will be gratefully appreciated)

My wife and I were there last week and stayed at Relais Santa Chiara, about a 5 minute walk outside the city walls. it was nice, very clean with a small balcony with a great view of the countryside. The rooms were pretty basic. Modern, clean, not tons of character, and the breakfast was nice. Parking is free, if you're driving. Also, the restaurant at BelSoggiorno is excellent. Have a great trip!

Just returned last week. The Antico Pozzo is very lovely, though they were fully booked while I was there. I would try them first. We had a nice room at Bel Soggiorno...good location and they were very helpful. Our room overlooked the street and was very comfortable and large, and good location. There are wonderful rooms overlooking the beautiful view off the back of the incomparable Tuscan countryside. The restaurant is indeed wonderful with a beautiful view. Try the Carpaccio appetizer...excellent! Also, a wonderful local couple whom we met at Palm Sunday services recommended to us the little trattoria Chiribiri, across the street from Bel Soggiorno and down to the left a bit, in P. della Madonna. You sort of have to look for it...ask around...it is very small...well-loved by the local families and therefore not so touristy. Good food and a very nice owner who does not speak English, though his (one) waitress does, and they do have a menu in Italian.

Sorry, I meant "a menu in English"!

The Leon Blanco is right across from La Cisterna and seemd very nice. Some rooms overlook the piazza where the cistern is. I don't know the view from the rear rooms. Bel Soggiourno seemed very nice also but I would prefer a room on the piazza rather than a room on the street, although either would be quiet.

You might try the Bel Soggiorno... we had a lovely room with a balcony facing the street and the town rooftops.

I believe they have a very nice restaurant there as well.

Via San Giovanni, 91
