Salzkammergut Lakes & Mountains tour?

Hello Group,

Can anyone comment on the Salzkammergut Lakes & Mountains tour?

http://www.panoramatours.at/country/15.shtml

We (myself, wife and 2 1/2 year daughter) were thinking of taking this tour during our trip to Salzburg this August and were wondering if it's worth it.

Thanks for any feedback/suggestions.

If you would like a guided tour of the lakes region, then this should be fine. It would give you a quick overview of the lakes, so if you only have a few days in the Sburg area, you will get to see them and then decide afterwards if you want to go back to any of them.
OTOH, if you don't want a guided tour and have plenty of time to explore, you can reach all of the destinations on the tour itinerary by regional PostBus. The Postbuses are very good and quite comfortable (they're not quite heavy duty tour buses, but they're better than city buses); the Salzkammergut region is very well served by an extensive bus network.

With a toddler, you might feel more comfortable doing it on your own in some ways, because you can stop, relax if a place catches your interest, stroll through the pretty towns.

I did a Panorama Sound of Music tour with my 79 yo mother in late May and we enjoyed it. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the region and talked about much more than the SoM trivia...for example, the amazing change of fortune St. Gilgen has enjoyed from both the SoM and the money machine that the Red Bull drink turned out to be (Red Bull's was invented by a guy from St. Gilgen who has built an amazing corporate headquarters there, and the town now has more money than it knows what to do with).

If you plan to spend more than four days in the region, then I would suggest trying to see the lakes on your own, perhaps over a two day period. But with three days or less, the tour sounds fine.

Thanks BTilke, we will be in Salzburg for 3 days and it seems like we might be better off taking the tour for lack of time.

We also took a Panorama SOM tour and were pleased. Our guide gave us good information about the region and the towns we visited, much more than just movie info. Since we had the small mini-van tour to ourselves (a family of six) we were also given the option to make a few detours.
