Salzburg/Berchtesgaden: Both Sound of Music & Nazi Sites in 24 hrs?

My two teens (ages 13 and 15) have a short stay in the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area in June. We arrive early one day and leave in the late afternoon the next. (Please, no lectures about staying longer, this is all we have.) My daughter wants to see some of the Sound of Music sites and my son is obsessed with history, thus desiring to visit Eagle's Nest, the documentation museum, etc. Any suggestions for accomplishing these seemingly diametrically opposed travel experiences in such a short time? Should we just do one the first day and the other the second? Or, is there a logical way to combine them? Would a private guide be recommended over a group tour, since we need to maximize our time? If so, any suggetions for one? We are booked at the Weisse Taube in Salzburg, which looked to be a fun place for our one night in the area.

Thank you for your anticipated suggestions!

You could do one each day with no problem.

The SOM tour is about 4 hours but there are many SOM sites to see on your own while in Salzburg such at the Festival Hall, the cemetery and catacombs at St. Peter's (filmed in Hollywood but based on this cemetery), Mirabell gardens (tour drops you off here but doesn't tour it with you), and Nonnberg Abbey (the altar and frescoes are wonderful, bring coins to light them up!). The tour doesn't cover the above sites.

On the tour, you do see the gazebo now relocated to Hellbrunn Castle, you can't go in it due to drunken tourist breaking a leg while dancing around in it and falling off the bench. If you don't take the tour, you can take a bus here as it isn't far from the center.

Also, the tour makes a stop across the lake from the Palace of Leopoldskron so you get a view of the rear of the 'house' (wasn't their real home... just movie), drive through the lake district with a stop in St. Gilgen for a photo op of the opening scenes, luge run, coffee/cake stop, and the Church at Mondsee (wedding scene in movie but a beautiful church).

Next day, you could drive or take a tour to Berchtesgaden.

Very helpful, thanks. How long should we devote to Berchtesgaden, and is it something we could see on our own (public transportation, self-guided) or is a tour recommended?

Sorry, I haven't been to Berchtesgaden... was going to stop on my way to Innsbruck/Hall in Tyrol but ran out of time.

Have you searched on this site or googled Berchtesgaden? I'm sure there's tons of info to be found. I'm pretty sure you can take public transportation there and do a self-guided tour.

Have fun!

No problem seeing what you want to see.
Aim for Kehlstein mountain at Berchtesgaden early on the first day because you are relying on clear weather to see the beautifull views from the 1847m Eagles Nest. Unless you walk you must take the special bus to the top from the new car park which has the Dokumentation Centre which is a worthy visit because you can see part of the SS bunkers built into the mountain as well as the WW2 history. Yes you can do everything yourself but I suggest that as you need the historical information as well as scenic views you contact Christine and David Harper on http://www.eagles-nest-historical-to...ex.php?navid=2. Sleep in Berchtesgaden the first evening. Salzburg is only bout 12 miles from Berchtesgaden.
There is a salt mine in Kehlstein mountain which you could visit after the Nest then a short 4 mile drive to Lake Konigssee for a two hour boat trip and up the cable car to the top of Mount Jenner which is next to Mount Watzmann (Germany's second highest mountain. There is a MacDonalds at Konigssee for your teenagers and the Rodelbahn on Mount Kehstein. More info on my webpage www.berchtesgaden.co.uk Bob Lewis

Excellent info! Thank you Bob for the specifics. I will check your website and contact the tour guides you recommend.

And yes, joannyc, I did read every post I found about the two separate sites/tours, and found lots of good info about each. However, I am seeking details on how best to combine or arrange them in the most efficient way due to our specific time constraints, lack of car, etc.

We can shortcut the Sound of Music thing (just moderate interest, liked the movie, would want to see a few things but everything remotely connected), but will want to do the best, most comprehensive and accurate tour of the Nazi sites for my history-obsessed son.

Thanks to all who have any suggestions for this.

Okay, we are booked on the Harpers' Eagle's Nest tour on the afternoon of 19 June at 1pm. Now, how do we add the salt mine tour? Is there time after? Better to do before? I see that it takes 1-1/2 hours. We are staying in Salzburg, so will need to get a bus back there for dinner.

It would be really funny, Traveltrio, if we are there at the same time. My boys are 13 and 16, and my dtr 10.

I am leaving today, so I'm a bit spacey. I see you'll be there on the 19th so I will miss you by a few days. Happy travels!

allib123,
Hoping you'll see this post - curious whether you succeeded in doing salt mines, eagle's nest, and berchtesgaden all in one day? I'd like to do something similar if it's feasible. Let me know if you see this! Thanks!

Allib123 hasn't posted on Fodors in 18 month so very likely s/he won't see your question, though it is possible.

You might want to start a new thread w/ your questions since folks may not notice the dates of this one and start answering the OP.
