Salzburg transportation - to/from Schloss Leopoldskron to Old Town

We have hotel reservations at the Schloss Leopoldskron and I'm trying to figure out the best method to get between there and Salzburg's Old Town. We will have a rental car, but I'm wondering if it's a hassle to drive and find parking.

It looks like at least a 20-minute walk. Anyone know if it's an easy walk? Is it flat? Is it safe (especially in the late evenings)?

Or are we better off taking a taxi?

I also asked the hotel and they suggested taxi. If we end up going back and forth a lot, though, like for sightseeing in the day, then back for dinner at night, that costs adds up, so maybe we should just drive ourselves. They also suggested the Hop on Hop off bus, but that route looks like it takes a long time.

It is flat, as long as you use the Neutor tunnel (joining Neutorstrasse and Karajanplatz), that has a separate bore for walkers and bikes. I would consider Salzburg as a safe city even by night, however you will be crossing a relatively uncrowded zone.
As for driving and parking, it is very easy: you are only few minutes driving from the two huge parking house dug up in the mountain and accessed from Neutorstrasse. The parking fees are very steep, however if you manage to buy something in the centre you can have your parking ticket punched and the fee halved. The cheaper shop linked to this scheme is the DM drugstore in Universitätsplatz.
