Salzburg to Neuschwanstein
We would like to visit the Neuschwanstein castle while in Salzburg on the 23rd of December.
We will not have a car so by train it will have to be. Please advice us on what is the quickest and easiest way |
Linda,
you will have to go by train but you are in the Christmas season and may find it closed. Are you staying overnight? There is more than likely a bus tour also from Salzburg up to the castle. The castle in Salzburg is lovely too. I was there one winter and we had to walk up the steep road on snow and ice, lucky for the chain rope to help. Deb |
Just checked - Neuschwanstein is open on Dec 23 (closed Dec 24-26).

Thanks sweetpdeb and quokka
We are sleeping the 23rd in Munich. We have unfortunately only that day to see the castle. My sister is flying back to South Africa that evening and she is simply dying to see Neuschwanstein. Would it be possible to go by train to Neuschwanstein from Salzburg without going through Munich? |

Het jy enige tips, email my asb. by [email protected]. Dankie

It will take you a minimum of four hours and two to three changes to get to Hohenschwangau, where Neuschwanstein is located. Your connections will be through Munich, which is 2 hours from Hohenschwangau. So, you'll be travelling a minimum of 6 hours by train to see the castle and then return to Munich. Having been to Hohenschwangau, I'm not sure that long a day trip is worth it; but to you perhaps it will be.
As an alternative, you could stop on the way to Munich at Herrenchiemsee palace (if open), modeled after Versaille, and spend time there, saving yourself about four hours of train travel. |
Thanks for all the advice!
It is my youngest sister dearest wish to see the castle so we have decided that we will do Nueschwanstein after all! We are departing the morning 6:00 from Salzburg, arriving just before 11 in Fussen. Then we have exactly 4 hours to see the sights because our train to Munich departs 15:00 Its going to be a very, very busy day... |
