Without knowing the context of this question (how many days in Salzburg? any other destinations in Germany or any other country in Europe?), I'm not sure I would recommend Munich as the only, or most desirable day trip destination from Salzburg.

But sure, it's do-able. And the Deutsches Museum is a good place to spend a fraction of a day or a whole day. Best if you are comfortable reading at least some German. The Alte Pinakothek is also good for an hour or two, in addition or as an alternative.

Best wishes,

Rex
Just about equidistant from Salzburg are Innsbruck and Munich. A bit closer is Linz, a nice city on the Danube. And a bit farther, but a real overlooked jewel, is Klagenfurt. For a day trip, though, it might be a bit too far.

Personally, I'd opt for Cesky Krumlov and Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic rather than Munich. And it turns out that they are a bit closer. If you go to either or both of these two, you'll get a really different experience from a trip to Munich.

This answer surprised me - - I was thinking twice this far.

from www.viamichelin.com

137 mi in 2h34 (including 92 mi by motorway in 1h20)

Keep in mind that you may have to arrange special permission (and pay extra) to be allowed to take a rental car into the Czech Republic.

Best wishes,

Rex
