salzburg or innsbruck daytrip from munich
My husband and will be in Munich for 5 days at the end of October. We would like to take a daytrip to either Innsbruck or Salzburg. We would be taking the train.
Which city do you suggest and why?
Thank you for your help! Laurie

Salzburg!
I was very excited to visit Innsbruck since I remember when the Olympics were held there and I had loved the charm of the place. However, we were quite disappointed in our visit to Innsbruck--you can pretty much see the entire city in an afternoon.
Salzburg, on the other hand, can keep you busy for days. Rent the Sound of Music for a preview.

Thank you for your answers. It sounds like Salzburg is the way to go.
Just to be clear, though, we will only be able to make a trip there and then head back to Munich in one day.
Thanks for your advice. Laurie

Salzburg here as well. You can take the "Bayernkarte", which allows up to 5 of you to travel in second class on local trains after 9am from Munich to Salzburg and back for a total of 27 Euro. If it is a weekend, you can purches a Schoenes Wochenende pass for 30 Euro or so and not have the time constraints. Both are an execellent deal.

I agree, Salzburg is the clear choice.
Just bear in mind that Sound of Music is a fairy story, a tale that does not exist in reality. The movie even moved the Swiss boundary a couple of hundred miles east. If the von Trapps had escaped by climbing the hills west of Salzburg, they would have walked into Germany.
Salzburg is more than that and to see it as an SOM set is highly restrictive, a romantic limitation of a city that should be more famous for Mozart and the Salzburg Music Festival than anything else.
I, for one, have never understood the appeal of even thinking Innsbruck is a good tourist city. Actually outside of the old town (churches et. al.), the Festung on the hill, Schloss Hellbrunn, the Mirabell gardens, the Festspielhaus and the music festival, and the Marionetten Theater, Salzburg is a modern city with light industry and other businesses.
As it is, the charm of Salzburg has appeal for many people. It has for me.

When you get off the train, walk over to the Mirabell Gardens and take one of the walking tours of Old Town in English. They will fast forward you through the area and give you a few anecdotes about the Archbishops, the "movie'and Mozart. It's brief, you'll have time then to go up to the fortress, go through a museum, shop or go back and revisit any place in detail. You will wish you had more than one day! Lunch at the Stiftskellar St. Peter's was one of the most enjoyable midday meals we've ever had. It deserves a leisurely pace, however.

Salzburg is a wonderful spot - just came back in June and had a great time. If you are looking for a B&B in the area, we stayed art Sallerhof and loved it. http://sallerhof.com/. This was our favorite after 30 days in Europe and the first place we stayed. If you would like more info - email me offline and I will give you info - [email protected]

Laurie;
let's make it one more for Salzburg. That's no slight to Innsbruck - it's a great city, but Salzburg is a true gem.
Be sure to visit Stiftskirche St. Peter - the coolest cemetery on Earth. E
