Salzburg itinerary review
 

I'l have three days in Salzburg a week from this Thursday. I enjoy art museums, castles, palaces, etc. I think this is pretty doable, but just looking for any feedback and/or thoughts on lunch places. I think I'll walk nearly everywhere, aside from the Saturday going to Hellbrunn, where I'll grab the bus. Maybe I should bus each day from hotel to center?

Perhaps look at the Salzburg Card for your stay. A 48 or 72 hour card (which begins with the first use) offers free transportation throughout the city and would cover just about every attraction on your list (and a 20% discount on the Hallstatt Salt Mines if that is part of your plan).

By way of a small example, we spent an overnight in Salzburg earlier this month. The 24 hour card was paid for with a visit to Hohensalzburg (and allowed us to skip the queue and go directly onto the funicular); Residenz; and the Salzburg Christmas Museum (whimsical, and one that I had not previously visited.)

Does the itinerary itself seem doable?

No, you can't always purchase the card at the first place you visit; however, you can purchase it at the train station TI. You'll need to sign and date the card if you plan to use public, in case an inspector asks.

General thoughts on the itinerary:

The Capuchin Monastery might not be accessible when you return from Hallstatt.

The "Dom Quartier" ticket includes the Residenz, the Salzburg Dom, and St. Peter's Abbey, which you have spread over two days. The best approach is to enter at the Residenz; there are opportunities to bypass the museums if the collections do not appeal to you, after which you are led to the upper level of the Dom before exiting the cathedral. Afterwards you can go to St. Peters.

There is a restaurant atop Hohensalzburg where you can have lunch (could be fully seated, though); alternatively, the Stieglkeller near the funicular would work. Plus, it's Salzburg's beer, like a consumable souvenir. :)

Dinner at 1900 with a departure at 2100 would feel rushed to me, especially considering you'll have to fetch your luggage at the hotel, as well?

Thanks for your thoughts. Wouldn't the Salzburg card include all the Residenz, Dom, etc., basically everything in Salzburg? Or is it only a few things?

6:30? 6:45 on 9/2? I just wonder how much time I'll need at the two palaces and if 6:30 is cutting it a little too close?

Yes, the Salzburg Card includes everything on the "Dom Quartier" ticket, and quite a bit more. I find it to be one of those "City Cards" that is actually a good value.

I think 1830 could work; you won't feel rushed and can enjoy the view a little more.

Supposed to rain all three days; Thursday looks warmer and thunderstorms while Friday/Sature both lows around 50 and highs around 59. Given this, should I plan to alter my schedule in any way? Looks like I will be outdoors and/or at castles/palaces/Hallstat most of the time. Salzburg doesn't seem as much of an indoorsy museum place as Munich has been so far.

Sorry. "Schnürlregen" in Salzburgland has ruined our plans more than once this summer. We were thinking of taking a long weekend this weekend to Mittenwald for an Almabtrieb when we looked at the weather and scrapped our plans.

Others may feel differently, but I would considering passing on Hallstatt. Once the rain clouds have settled in, the view and experience is underwhelming at best.

Aside from museums, maybe a visit to the Werfen ice caves if possible?

I've already booked the tour and actually Hallsatt is a big reason why I wanted to go there at all. I know it won't be as pretty but still should be a sight.

I am seeing mostly museums and palaces/castles, which will limit my outdoors but not completely. Oh, well I'll have the umbrella and poncho.
