Hi Lisa, Salzburg is a definite treat. It is a charming town. The castle is worth while and if the weather is good stop and eat lunch in the outdoor resturant that overlooks the city. You could take a trip to Helbrun(sp) Monistory. As you wander the old streets look at the carvings over the shops. These are from the time before most people could read and represent the wares sold in the shops at that time. You could do a side trip to Berchasgarten although there might be snow. Also take a tour of the salt mines near there.
Have a great trip.
Regards,
Art
Salzburg is definitely a charmer with plenty to offer. In fact I ended up staying over just to get my fill. October should be a fabulous time to go and in case you need any basic info you might want to check with www.salzburginfo.or.at. I was there at the beginning of December so I took advantage of the Austrian folk music concerts offered. The one that I remember best took place in the Hohensalzburg Fortress that is about 400 feet above the city (take a funicular or it's a hefty walk - but worth it). I mixed up the historical such as the Mozart museums with a bit of schmaltz. I took Bob's Tours "The Sound of Music Tour" which was done with a soundtrack no less. It was actually worth it to go up in the Salzkammergut (lakes and mountains) since I had no transportation and probably wouldn't have seen it any other way. And since it's a university town, you will find plenty of places to eat. Let me know if you need any additional info - I'll be happy to share with you. So, my vote would be "Yes" - you should include Salzburg. You won't be disappointed.

SAlzburg was the site of a conference I attended for a week a whil ago. I would definitely take the side trip to the salt mines and Berchesgarten. BUT we found that the food was rather bland and that restaurants tended to close early, so plan your dinners judiciously and with the use of a current guidebook. The Casino was great fun for an evening, we watched someone lose $10,000 (equiv) in a single throw! I was much more shocked than he seemed to be.
