Salzburg Hotels
 

We am having a hard time deciding on a hotel for Salzburg. I have looked at trip advisor and Hotel Zum Hirschen and Hotel Auersperg are rated pretty high. We are a family of four and we want to spend around $150-250 a night. We are traveling in the summer when the rates tend to be higher. Also we will be arriving by train. Does anyone have suggestions for a hotel for us? Thank you.

We stayed at the Vaschenbagetetsch Hotel, right next to Mozart's home. It's a four star hotel that costs about $175 a night in the summer for a double room. They even have two bedroom suites for $260 a day which is a huge bargain. It was very clean and the staff were friendly, and the location can't be beat. I wouldn't stay any where else.

A bit off subject, how long is needed to visit Mozart's home?

Do a search under Pension Nonntal. It is a family B&B and well located.

There seems to be no such place as the Vaschenbagetetsch Hotel..are you sure you have the right name, alskar?

alkskar was too paranoid about being by herself to remember the name of the hotel where she stayed. No wonder she's such a loser. TROLL!

We have visited Salzburg twice and have stayed in the city, at the Hotel Elephant, and outside of the city, in Anif actually, at The Hotel Freisacher. I can recommend both of them.

The Elephant has the advantage of being in the pedestrian area of the city -- putting you in the middle of everything.

The Freisacher is a 10 minute bus ride out of town, but it is so charming, so homey and wonderful, that it will always be our first choice if we return. It's where we discovered heated bathroom floors. The price is right, the breakfast is hearty and the people are very friendly.

We stayed at the Hotel Auersperg in May 2004. We had a Suite and loved it! They have a very good breakfast (in comparison to the other hotels we stayed in that trip.) The location was very good and we could easily walk to all the major sites. We had good service and the hotel offers free parking and internet service. For the price, it was great for us. Good luck in your planning!

Actually, the hotel is called Elefant. At The Elephant, you must bring a trunk, and the price is peanuts.

But if you stay, they'll never forget you.

We stayed at Elefant two weeks ago. The lobby is tiny but the rooms are spacious. It is right in the middle of things and easy to return to for short breaks from running around. They are renovating their breakfast room so we had breakfast in the dining room which was otherwise closed. My only problem was the quality of the breakfast for a high priced 4 star hotel. It lacked breadth and quality- vry pedestrian. Prices are going up. We paid 157 euros for a mid-week stay.
Arriving by train is no problem- lots of taxis at the station.
Be aware that a lot of the charm of the cobblestone streets and no alleys vanishes at 6 am when the garbage truck parks under your open window.
All in all a lovely city-enjoy your stay.

We stayed in the Elefant several years ago. It is very convenient for the "old" part of the city, the Mozart house, cathedral, etc., but we found Salzburg to be fairly walkable anyway.

Our room was NOT large by any stretch of the imagination and the window looked out into an air shaft...so i would hazard a guess that the rooms vary a great deal in terms of size, etc.
