Salzburg at Christmas

Does anyone have suggestions for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for lunch or dinner? Thanks. JKR2006

We will be in Salzburg over Christmas too and will have dinner at our hotel. Suggest you check if the hotel you want to stay in has a restaurant and if so, will it be open for Christmas.
FWIW, I stayed at the Best Western zum Hirschen in Salzburg in May with my mother and we ate most of our dinners at the hotel's restaurant. Surprisingly good, with a strong emphasis on organic food (vegetarian and non). Two thumbs up for the draft Hirter organic (bio) pils!

We were in Salzburg at Christmas two years ago staying in a small hotel. Our hotel made reservations for us for Christmas even dinner at a mediocre Italian place that was crammed to the gills. Check with your hotel. Christmas eve will probably be easier than Christmas day. We laid in a stock of cheese bread and yoghurt.

Hi JKR, I've answered a similar question in the past, here's a copy:

A few years ago, we had a nice formal christmas dinner at the Hotel Sacher which has a terrace overlooking the river & old town. It is a very well renovated grand-style hotel in Salzburg.

Another traditional place for christmas dinner is at the Goldener Hirsch hotel restaurant which has curving ceiling arches. It was just featured in a christmas travel article so it was booked solid when we tried to pre-book it in November. This would've been my first choice based on ambiance/decor.

"Sankt PetersKeller" located behind St Peter's church also had a special christmas outdoor festivities with gluhwein & wandering musicians in traditional costumes inside their festively decorated front courtyard. We didn't have a reservation so couldn't enter the restaurant but were able to join the gluhwein & music festivities on the 23rd. Food was decent when we went back to eat there a few days later.

You can view the inner courtyard(Innenhof) and various dining rooms at http://www.haslauer.at/deutsch/Stift...plettframe.htm

"Alt Salzburg" is a traditional gourmet restaurant where you can dine inside a large cave in the back of the restaurant. We had the most attentive service here compared to all the restaurants we've been in Salzburg though I have no complaint about service in any restaurant in Salzburg.

"Zum Eulenspiegel" is a narrow restaurant that has a great traditional ambiance and a very crowded bar downstairs. You climb the small stairway for their standard but good traditional fare served in the five floors above the bar. Service is a bit hectic as the waiters climb up & down between floors. I've eaten here 3 or 4 times because I enjoy the relaxed, cozy atmosphere and comfort food they serve.

Two other good but simple restaurants (not for christmas dinner):

STERNBRAU: sprawling hectic German diner, least attentive service with its own brewery :www.sternbraue.at

K+K RESTAURANT am WAAGPLATZ I've dined here twice for the gastronomic quality food but the restaurant interior is more for simple business lunch:

Hope that helps
